I find it interesting that Nikon and Canon, rumored to be coming out with something similar, are doing this. As I learned of the rumors, I kept asking what will be missing that justifies the affordable price? Something's gotta give, right? Apparently not. To me, this D600 looks like a better all-around camera than the D800 which seems to be strictly a landscape camera.

The body is simply a D7000 one and it is hopeless for a 2000 pus camera. The construction cannot be compared to a similar priced D700 or 5DMkII.
When the rumours started, it was supposed to be priced $1500 which could be reasonable. But why would you want to spend 2100 buck on am amateur body when you could get 5DMkII or D700 (if still around) for a similar or cheaper price.
I had my grip on D7000 squeak and flex when I hold and move, send it twice to Nikon sevice to finally fix it.
The front is a cheap plastic and very thin near the battery door and seems to be a common issue(unless the changed it on the d600).
IQ should be good based on the samples but still doesn't justify the price, the D300/s is a much better body.
The handling would not be good on the D600 and I am sure professionals/semi used to D700 or even D300(s) will not like it.
Appeals only to enthusiasts.

One thing I've seen reported missing is a flash sync cable connection and also a flash sync limited to 1/200th. No biggie for many, yet for studio photographers (serious full frame users) this is an important detail.

Also can't figure out the pricing - while Nikon perhaps caught Canon napping with the price of the D800 vs the 5D3, the D600 is not cheap at £2000 when you can get a D800 for £2100 or a 5D3 £2400 - both more capable cameras (on paper anyway). And there is the new Sony A99 at £2400 - which looks to be a very interesting camera.

Anyway, nothing new or exciting offered in the spec of the D600, though I would think it would make a decent all round general purpose camera. Just don't think it offers value for money. As far as I'm concerned, the worst bit about this is that it doen't put any pressure on Canon to produce a 'low cost' full frame body.

Cheers,

Colin

Clearly Nikon is targeting someone who has never touched a semi-pro body.
But anyways i have a feeling that they will drop down the prices with sales etc. may be around December it could go for $1800 on sale.

The choices of D800 at one extreme and D600 at the other makes no sense, when all they needed was an updated D700 (21 MP) with movie mode added.

Thanks to Nikon for full frame camera like D600. Would be interesting to see its ISO performance in low light. It is in my wish list

The D600 is only £100 more than a D800? Even with toilet paper US Dollars (Thanks Banana Ben) that's only $160. In the states the price difference is $900.

Totally agree. Landscape and HD video. For just about every other purpose the 5DMkIII is a better bet.

Other way round! But that is based on a quick check of online prices, not retail. Of course as pre order the D600 is gonna be full price, while the D800 has already got to the discounted/special offers stage. I suspect the price difference is not so much that the D800 is cheap here, more like the D600 price has been inflated.

In fairness a $900 differential does make more sense - that seems a sensible differential.

Colin

I thin the European prices have been brought down where it should have been.
I don't know about D700, but the images I saw on dpreview of the D600, high ISO were unbelievable. How does the High iso of this one compare to D700? or even 5D MkIII

If this camera had been in a semi-pro body like the D700's, it would have been the D700 successor everyone was wanting(called the D700X, D710, or whatever). Instead they put the D700's successor into what appears to be a D7000-like body.

Whatever. I shoot with a D90 so what do I know.

According to preliminary data, this model is the same problem with skin tone, blue and green channels, we can only hope that it's not so bad.
