I have been approached by a rather large advertising agency for "full rights, without time limit utilisation".

They have advertised for big corporations in the past (Perrier, Red Bull, Nestle etc).

What is the going rate for a full resolution image concerning this request?

Well you're gonna lose all the rights on that image, hence it'll be as they actually took the photo. For this kind of license i'd rather go on the amount of money needed for a good prime lens (e.g CANON EF 300 f2.8 L IS II)

That lens is worth what, €1,500? That's an awful lot of money for a single image, whatever the terms of use.

The terms of use requested by the advertising agency in the original post are equivalent to a royalty-free licence from stock photo agencies like Alamy. The most Alamy charges for a royalty-free image at maximum resolution is €360. I would regard this amount as the absolute maximum.

No, I think the request in the OP is ambiguous, but a) given its a big adverstising agency and b) they say full rights, I'd rather suspect they mean exclusive rights - most major ad agency dislike royalty free, as it leaves the image free for other people to use in ways that may affect their campaign.

As will become apparent, exactly how the image will be used, for how long, circulation, size etc. etc. all have a bearing on the appropriate fee. But it could range from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand or more.

Of course you will also need to consider how unique the image is - if a similar shot can be obtained easily elsewhere, it would be very easy to price yourself out of contention. But do not be afraid to ask the market rate. A reputable company will be well aware what the market rate is, and will have already pencilled this into their budget.

For full rights price should easily be in the thousands. I like to look at www.masterfile.com, their price matrix can be a good guide.

Just to be clear the CANON EF 300 f2.8 L IS II is about 6500€ and not 1500€ as wrongly written by kukkudrill

I have been given no info, but have already asked for, the usage intentions. Given they are prominent in group "A" countries it would be Germany, france, uk etc

Image is somewhat unique as it is the only one ive seen like it...

This particular sale is quite new ground for me - usually they are for single use assignments.

"Full exclusive rights with no time limit" means a lot. As already said: you lose all your rights! The picture can be use for print, commercial use etc. by the agency. For example: A cover shot for a frontpage of a magazine can cost 1000 Euro and up. So you should consider all of that!
Be aware: the agency might think you are no professional photographer and so they will try to lower the price! Let them know, that you are well aware of the pricing in that business!

Your profile tells me you are German. If that is right, than this might help you: There is a price list of the "Mittelstandsunion für Fotomarketing". You have to pay for that list, but it gives you a good guideline, as it is also used at court!

All estimates are pointless without seeing the picture in question.
The quote needs to be based on the uniqueness of the picture.

Stimmt, die meinte ich! Wie ich schon sagte, die Liste kostet, ist aber nicht teuer und kann über das Internet bestellt werden. Sehr hilfreich, da die Liste auch bei Streitigkeiten um Bildhonorare vor Gericht hinzugezogen wird.

Alles klar, das habe ich im internet gefunden. Aber, leider gibts kein PDF... Per post dauert ca 3 oder 4 tage.

Thank you for the suggestion I will order one anyway, as it is a good basis to work from and then everybody is on the same page so as to speak when it comes to charging.

PS: no problem with German. I need the practice with non-aviation stuff...

Seems the agency were not prepared to pay fairly for lifetime worldwide exclusive rights/usage including copyright ownership...

Expect everything for nothing...
