Greetings,

I took a photo of a C-130 from Pittsburgh's 911th Airlift Wing with "80811" on the tail. It would be my first military plane in the DB. How do I get or find the correct information to plug into the upload page?

Thanks!

Can be a bit of a pain sometimes to find military regs. For many cargo aircraft, the regs follow the format:

XX-XXXX

And the last 5 digits of the reg are the number on the tail. So the one you saw would be:

X8-0811

Finding out what that first "X" is can be a pain. Sometimes I'll just cycle through 0-9 until I get a hit. Or look on Wikipedia in the hopes they have a photo showing the tail number, which is what I did for this one (I looked up the 911th Airlift Wing, and they have a photo showing C-130 78-0807, so I assumed the 1st digit is a 7). The full reg is 78-0811.

You can also check Scramble to verify the aircraft is in the wing/squadron you saw:

http://www.scramble.nl/milbase.htm

Then you just upload like any other photo.

I believe that the first two digits are the fiscal year, although in the case of a C-130 that doesn't necessarily narrow it down a whole lot. I have found this db to be useful:

78-0811

Unfortunately that leads to a C-130 from Oklahoma

EDIT: According to a source, these are the registrations of the 911th C-130's:

78-0806 "Flight 93: American Heroes"
78-0807 "America's Pride"
78-0808 "All Gave Some - Some Gave All"
78-0809 (unknown)
78-0810 (unknown)
78-0811 (unknown)
78-0012 "Freedom Isn't Free - Dedicated to All Persian Gulf War Veterans"
78-0813 "Welcome Aboard the Pirate Ship"

Unidentified nose art "We Have Not Forgotten" belongs to one of the three unknowns.

This website corroborates what this source states:
http://www.opshots.net/gallery2/inde...earch=Y29uc3RydWN0bnI6MzgyLTQ4MjE=

That would mean the OK C-130 is not properly ID'd in the DB.

If you had looked it up on Scramble, you would see it's part of the 758th Airlift Squadron, which is part of the 911th Airlift Wing.

It is properly ID'd based on the last photo uploaded of it. If you look, you'll see the last photo was from 2006.

Anyway, I'm not sure how that affects you uploading it, since wing/squadron are not part of the upload fields, far as I know. There's nothing that says "911th Wing" or "Oklahoma" in any of the upload fields. Airplanes switch units from time to time.

Go to this site and enter 811 in the upper box and C-130 in the box below it:
http://users.rcn.com/jeremy.k/serialSearch.html
You will quickly find it is 78-0811, a C-130H, cn 382-4821.
