Hello! I am planning on going to the 2013 EAA Air Venture! I really want to know how it is for spotters? Just like a review of the show, also I have a really important question! Do any airliners or "heavy" airplanes arrive? Which lens will I need? And what should I take, like a list!

Thanks!

It i definitely something to see -especially if it is your first time. You will see everything from ultralights to airliners( I was in awe watching the A380 demo). The actual show starts around 2 and goes until about 6. Before that things are going out and coming in with regularity. However the main runway is 18-36 and the crowd line is on the west side looking east. Lens -wise I carry enough lenses to cover 28mm to 400mm. 500mm would be needed for the smaller aircraft in flight. Also you will want to bring a portable chair and some walking shoes along with other items you need for being outside for extended periods.

Thanks, I am really looking forward to it, because of the variety of airplanes.
I currently have the 75-300mm do you think that they will work for the airshow, are the planes actually very far from you, when on flight?

It will definetly works. My first visit at OSH was with the same lens.
A lot of aircrafts flying over you (when you sitting on the grass near main rwy) but mostly over runway doing aerobatics.
Every year some airliner arrive. This year there was SWA 737 and flying hospital DC-10 along with military heavies with C-5 on the front. If you are planning to be there whole week you can get everything that will be there. If you think to go only for one day you have to choose which day to go to get best birds that will attend Airventure. I chose last saturday of convention and it was really good day.
Regards , Gabriel

And, a hat for the sun and a lot of water for the heat. Also, keep an eye on the sky, particularly to the west, as thunderstorms can hit the field without a lot of warning.

One trick I use is to shoot the static aircraft during the daily airshow, as you will have a lot fewer people milling about the aircraft.

Also, be aware that there are really three airports that are part of the overall AirVenture. There is Wittman Field, the center of action, but there is also the Pioneer Airport just to the west of the main area and the Vette/Blust Seaplane Base, which is a short drive to the east on Lake Winnebago.

AirVenture is a great event to go see. There are a lot of static aircraft displays that show up for both exhibitors and just static displays(airline, Military/Government, warbird, etc). Some days you will have a few aircraft staying for the duration at Phillips 66 Plaza while others come in just for the day. I have not been there recently but the previous times I have been it is amazing that makes me want to go back again and again. Other than that, there are lots of aircraft that come in so the photographic opportunities are endless.

Bring your camera, charger and other equipment, and something to protect you from the sun and rain, and a chair, just have fun. It takes more than a day to go through the grounds and different aircraft show up at different days. Just check their website for updates on what is going to arrive.

Went last year and took about 4400 photos. Here's 86 of them:

All the airborne stuff was taken with a 100-400 lens. I was there for 5 days and there was always something new every day, definitely didn't get bored!
