Hello fellow a.nutters,

why are most of the Russian plane pictures made at the airbase called "Withheld"?

Anyway, what sensitive information can be gleaned from such pictures?

Why does the USAF not have such a problem with the pictures?

It is not a single location, but can be used for any location deemed too sensitive to list specifically.

Unlike in western developed nations, things are a little more restrictive in some parts of the world, including Russia. The photographers face a lot less hassle by withholding the exact location and the specific date, so we give them special dispensation to do so. The simple fact is that without that exception, many would simply not upload their images.

Honestly they are probably listed as location withheld because the laws in the USSR basically made most military locations "secret" back when that might have mattered. Then when orbital recon came into operation and all that crap became useless (at least for anything so blindingly obvious as an airbase) they never bothered to change it as that was part of the culture.

Now I suspect it simply endures because the current government is not inclined to change it and people have bigger problems. It does no one any good at all as everyone who needs to know or care where these things were at already knows. The Russians also know that they know. But the rule will stay in place from a combination of apathy and what amounts to tradition I would guess.
