Who are our Nikon D100 users?

The only one that I know of is Toni Marimon, who has some excellent images in the database.

I am hoping to have enough $$ saved up for the D100 (w/ lenses) by next month. Do you guys know much about the Nikkor 80-400mm VR lens? worth $1400?

Thanks,
Hank

Rumor has it that its almost as good as the Canon 100-400IS  Smile

If so well worth it - but note that Sigma have just released a stablised 80-400 lens. Don't know much more, but Sigma can produce very good glass at the upper end of the range and this new lens will almost certainly be available in Nikon mount, and will probably be cheaper.

Cheers,

Colin

I highly recommend the Nikon 80-400 VR. I have used it exclusively for almost two years.

Well, add me to the D100 list. Mine arrived today, along with my first lens, a 24-120mm f3.5-5.6D AF.

The battery is charging, there is a flight landing at BFI around 4pm I hope to catch, a BBJ that left GED this morning.

Hopefully my battery will charge faster than it takes a 737 to fly 1,000 miles.

I have been practicing with a rental D100, so hopefully I have my technique somewhat down, as this is is my first SLR.

I have tried both D100 and have used 80-400 on the D100 and also on my F5 which I still used to shoot slides.

I have one problem with the 80-400VR (compare to the 80-200/f2.8 which I mainly use) is that it seems the zoom turn is quite tight and not easy to turn for zoom on a moving airplane and the foucs is obviously slower than a 2.8 glass, but I think slightly faster than using a Teleconverter 2x. A problem with the VR mode on is, that it required one second of tracking/panning the moving/station subject then it will be switch on without blurring it. If you just shoot a moving subject without much pan, it have been blur and out of focus happened to me before. This is mentioned lot better on Nikon Manuel. Check Nikon website for the special guidance of using VR lens

D100 is just as good as Canon D60 so far I tried out, nothing really bad like those Canon guy said. except it swich off the screen auto. in 6 seconds.

I got mine a month or so ago and have yet to go back to my F100 (which I love as well)... I have shot several thousand images with it at this point and it has been great, just need more flash cards...

I agree with most of the comments... the 80-400VR is excellent (With AFS I would give him a ten out of ten)

I was advised about the stiff zoom ring before buying it. It wasn't easy at the beginning but now it works fine (is the mechanism softer now or have my left hand muscles been developed accordingly? Big grin).

I also had an F100: superb camera, but now is the backup one.

Here is a testout shot with my 80-400VR on D100, became a effectively 600mm shots. but this is not airplane. (Jpeg fine, but I compressed it down in Adobe PS7 and save in low format save disc space)

Raaf_Mirage is back in da house again. With these kind of comments you are not making any friends in this community.

I have read a lot about the D100, most of the users seemed to pretty happy with it.

One thing that was mentioned in almost every review, the D100 tend to underexpose the pictures.

Can you guys confirm that?

The 80-400VR lens does have a very tight zoom ring, and it does get to be a pain...I've never had a problem with the VR on my D1X or my F100. You get used to it quickly, and besides, the lens is razor sharp at 400mm on either slide or film. It's really worth the stiff ring...

And yes, my F100 is now the "primary backup" camera.

Vasco,

I researched the underexposure problem ad nauseum. I thought this was a pretty good explanation:

http://d100.topcities.com/discussion/aperturelever.html

The whole D100 Lounge website is a pretty good, if biased, knowledge base of D100 issues, etc.

For me it came down to personal choice, lots of people are happy with the D60, but they are very scarce here in Seattle. People are selling grey market D60s here for $2200. I wanted to deal with a local shop, so no mail order. No one could give me a firm order time, they were saying 4-8 weeks for the Canon. It came down to the D100 or the Fuji S2 Pro. They were within 10% of each other pricewise. The D100 I got is a Firmware version 2.0 camera, which sealed the deal for me.

Royal...

I am using a Nikon 80-200 f2.8 AF-S (the newer one) with and without the 1.4x tele (AF-S version), it has been the sharpest lens I own, at the moment. I have used some of my other lenses but don't find them as sharp even with the 1.4x ... Scott

Very nice one! D100 had a bit of a late start, but isn't any worse than the big 60.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
