Peter,

next time you are planning a trip to Brussels, let me know some 10 days in advance; I'll be happy to drive you around, we have some véry neat spots indeed  Big grin

Unfortunately I have to work, by doing so ironicly enough I will be on the freightside of the airport 3 to 4 times, unfortunately only for a brief moment...

But since there a load of Belgian freaks can be found here on Anet, I'm sure you'll get you part of good ol' belgian hospitality....after all this is thé country of the best beers  Innocent

Hi Peter!

BRU photography: you have to be by car, otherwise forget about it  Sad

But there are some exceptions for take off photography.

We have 2 neat spots:

1) the bridge at Sabena House:

2) the Brucargo spot (basically the aircraft rotate and fly overhead you):

How you get there:
When you are in the arrivals terminal, go outside. Walk to the left. About 200 metres further, you have a fence from where you can see Sabena Technics. On your right you have the car park, with just in front of it, a busy road. Make that you are on the footpath of that road (make that you don't take the wrong road, you have one on the side of the airport and one on the side of the car park. It's the one at the car park). When you are good, you will be on a foodpath with a small fence on your right side, to protect you from the cars. Follow this, it's quite long (certainly 500m). To check if you are good: all cars drive in the opposite direction of you (so for cars it's a one way direction) and the road has 2 or 3 sections. SN Technics, Sky Chefs (catering) etc will be on your left side. Follow untill you are at a bridge with a roundabout. Go right over there, cross the first street, walk under the bridge, cross the second street and there you enter a road which will lead you to DHL and Abelag (bizjets). Follow that road. If 25R is in use for take offs, you will see the aircrafts take off, and on your right side you will see several DHL's parked and bizjets. Continue, you will pass the Sobelair buildings and Sabena House. Continue untill you see the bridge over the 'highspeed route' or how do you say that. At the bridge, you have the first spot. If you want to see Brucargo (with normally Eva Air, Saudi Arabian Airlines Cargo, Singapore Airlines Cargo etc) + if you want to take rotate shots (make that you have a good zoom), go over the bridge, the road makes a right turn, follow the road past the houses and take the first road on your right when you have passed all houses (about 150 metres from the bridge). There is also a sign 'De Mosselbank'. Follow that road upstairs, to check if you are good: on your left side it should be all grass. Follow untill you reach the fence. There you can install yourself  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I hope it's clear, feel free to ask further questions. Movements: check http://www.brusselsairport.be on saturday evening.

I will not make it to lead you around, hopefully somebody else can! Because the best spots are landing spots, but without a car: forget about it.

Regards
Frederic

PS: why did you go on Sunday? BRU is quite silent on sundays... and they predict a lot of rain  Sad

Hi Peter,

SN Brussels long haul flights to Africa depart around noon.
SN473 Entebbe 10.40
SN203 Dakar 12.25
SN3139 Freetown 13.45
You can download the timetable
http://www.sntimetable.com/SN.pdf
According to the weather forecast (winds from the west) rwy 25R will be in use for take-offs. You only can take them during take-off. Best spot, as Frederic explained, is the environment of the sabena-house. I would advise you to stand on the parking lot next to Abelag (follow the signs general aviation - abelag). Think you need about 350mm for an A330.
Unfortunately i can't make it to BRU on Sunday. Good luck.

Sven

Frederic,
is it possible to get photos of Hewa Bora parked up at the gate or do they get parked on remote stands? Are they still flying in Saturday and out Sunday?

Alex: Hewa Bora parks at the B-Pier. I once managed to get a shot from it when I was in the A-Pier, but photographing aircrafts at their Pier in BRU is very difficult, like everywhere I guess.

The best thing you can do is go to the take off spots explained in this topic, and shoot her there.

But hurry, rumours are going to Hewa Bora will put it's code on SN flights, and will stop flying to BRU! Their loads are very high, but the aircraft is the problem. 9Q-CHA is already grounded and used for spare parts, I'm afraid it's almost the turn of their last one, 9Q-CHC  Sad

It would be a real shame if the Hewa Bora TriStar stopped, and not JUST because its TriStar! However, I did not expect them to be a long lived operator into BRU.
The time surely to have got it was on approach on a summer evening. I visited BRU from the UK last September and saw it land as I drove past - it was way too dark by then but it was still very nice just to see.

Just read on the kerozen mailing list that rwy07L/25R will be closed on sunday from 12.00 till 17.00 local time.

That means that the spot near the refugee centre along rwy 25L is the best for landings and line-up.

Hi Peter,

Look at this:
http://www.luchtzak.be/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1381

Getting to the refugee center is impossible, unless you know your way (not very easy) and you have a car.

Now that 25R is closed, I can only recommend you to stand at the car park, facing towards SN Technics. When it is heavy raining, you can go one floor lower. When it is ok, you can stand above, there is no fence and photography of 25L departures should be possible with some nice backgrounds.

How to go: go to the departures terminal before you leave the airport buildings. Go outside, and take the carpark at the left (not the new one at the right). Go to the upper floor, and from there you will be able to shoot some nice pictures.

Regards
Frederic

"Runway 07L/25R will be out of service due to helicopter traffic above Brussels"

If this is the case I doubt 25L will be used for departures??

Yes Staffan, because also 02/20 will be out of service in the morning..

Normally, 25L is only occassionally used for a departure (I saw that already from time to time). The problem is that no taxiway goes to the beginning of 25L. So aircrafts have to taxi to the end, backtrack 180° and take off. This takes some time which means that a lot of delays can be expected. Luckily BRU isn't very busy on Sundays but still busy enough to cause troubles.

When 02/20 opens in the afternoon, I wonder which runway will be in use. I think they will avoid to keep everything on 25L, so maybe t/o from 02 and landing on 25L?

Take off PM will be one of the possibilities although I think, if the wind is as strong as today, they might have quit some crosswinds for take off. As Sabena690 says, Sunday PM can be very calm so take off from 25L might be an option.
