I'm looking for opinions on Apple Computer's 20" Flat Panel monitors as it relates to photo editing. I'm thinking about buying a G5 with the 20" monitor to edit my photos on, among other uses.
I know that there are a ton of high quality CRT displays that are (1) larger and (2) half the cost, but the problem with those is they are HUGE! The Apple monitor gives me the big screen feel at 1/5 the size. Plus it's a widescreen monitor, which I like.

Most LCDs are meant for little more than Excel and Word.
So look very carefully, and remember that if you have the deskspace to spare, you can get a terrific 19" flatscreen CRT for relatively very little money, and you will get a better image at higher resolution to boot. Get an LCD only if you need to be portable or really have no other solution because of space limitations.

LCD flat panels can be great for editing photos, but you need to buy the best.
I use an HP 2025 20" LCD flat panel at work, and it is STUNNING at it's highest resolution (1600x1200). As a web/graphic designer, I was skeptical about IT buying me an LCD to work on, but I must say that I am very impressed with this thing. It's pin sharp, and has great contrast.
Costs about $1500(US), so it isn't cheap. But it is worth the money - I want one for home!!
Just a quick note, Apple's flatscreens are VERY different from other consumer-grade LCD screens. That's why they are so often used by design and publishing professionals. And, coincidentally, why they are also so much more expensive. But with Macs, you get what you pay for.
As with any monitor, you have to make sure it's calibrated properly and have a failsafe proofing system if you're planning on printing.

I do most of my editing on a 15" iMac screen. People need to keep in mind that Apple monitors (at least LCDs) are more crisp than their PC counterparts because of the digital connection between the two. When you set an Apple flat panel next to say a Sony, the Apple will be much more crisp.

This is because Apple uses a different default gamma setting to Windows - if you use Photoshop, you can use the View --> Proof Setup to see how an image will appear on a Mac, Windows or uncompensated RGB (eg. web browser).

I am using a Mac with Photoshop as well. I can not get any pics to display on a.net even when I use iPhoto too! Again mine work just fine when hosted elsewhere. I have tried to trouble shoot a little with Johan via email. Apparently, to this day, I still have no luck.
