Hey,
I just booked a 35 Euro return flight DUB to BHX for next Saturday (20/09).
What are the spotting areas/photo opportunities there ? and will anyone be spotting on that day ?
Will

William ... i flew from there last week, and on my return i stayed around for a few hours taking pics.
Birmingham is very good for photo's from the viewing area until around 11am when the sun starts to go around too far, but you can get some good head on shots of the aircraft looking straight into the sun ...
Check out my pics for a better idea of what im trying to say, or check out Derek Pedley's ones if you want to be more adventurous  Laugh out loud
Regards,
Shaun

We landed at BHX on r/w 15 (I think BHX is 33 & 15) and just before we flew over the threshold, we flew over a public park (there were people walking their dogs). I don't know what the park is called, but I would think you could get some cool airborne shots there (if they're landing on 15).

To avoid any misunderstanding EGFF is talking about the outdoor viewing area (there's an indoor one too). Yes, if 15 is in use you can get good afternoon shots from the public open grounds adjacent to the golf course. Afternoon shots of landings on 33 are possible from the sports fields and various other footpaths and fields on the other side of the A45 Coventry road. If you have a 400mm lens you can also shoot from the multistorey car park behind the hangars. One other excellent spot (in the afternoon) was a field next to Elmdon Lane which overlooks the runway just past the 33 threshold. The lane has been closed off. However, it is not known if the field is still accessible by foot and if security will chase you away. Technically, it's not private property!

Perhaps you should update your webpage Jon. The last I heard the spiral staircase at the old terminal was still closed off. I also note that there are at least three other spots with good photo opportunities which are not indicated.

When I was there last Monday, the 1st the stairs were open.

BTW, Any ideas where these were taken from?

I can confirm that the stairs on the old side are now open again

Gary the above pics 1 & 2 are from the new car park extension and picture number 3 is taken from the bridge at Marston Green railway station

Back to UTAs original post unless he is going to hire a car the only place to go by foot is the picnic area or the new long stay car park extension next to r/w 33

All the best

Derek

Thanks for the picture promo!

I can confirm I took the middle photo from the picnic/viewing area, but using about 500mm.

My map just shows the main photo spots, but you can get photo's from a load of others all round the airport, Birmingham is one of the best in the uk for photo spots although you may need a car or have a bit of a walk to get to some.

Recently a local policeman has approached spotters/photographers to get some feedback on improvements at B'ham for watching aircraft.

They are planning on writing a useful website for the airport from the Police's angle, such as where
not to park whilst waiting for passengers but also a part devoted to the
beloved aviation enthusiast.

Comparsion to Manchester and the M/cr Airport Police's attitude to spotters
was given together with a request for "professional holes to be cut in the
fence" for the photographers who don't have a step ladder etc and costs of
the parking - idea of a monthly/6mthly pass?

If anyone has any ideas sensible or wacky, they can contact Ian direct on
0121-767-6151 and leave a message etc with ideas.

Correct details - PC8184 Ian Drewett

Jon
