Okay, here is an email exchange I've just had about a photo usage request. Once again, an airline loaded with $$$ (they've paid a SLR and even a DSLR to a fellow spotter simply with photo fees - more than 1000 euro) asked me the permission to use a picture of mine... just read the messages (earlier one at the bottom)

I'd like to reply him that for photos are free only for a private use, which is not the case . Someone has a suggestion ?

Thx,

707

Hi there Antoine,
As this is just a letter for the staff at XXX (approx 100 people max) we
are not willing to pay for usage. Therefore I will not use your photo in any
news letters.

Thank you.

I find this a bit strange as they spent quite a lot to have these hanging from their walls at their STD base :

If the guy is from the airline that is on the photo, I've sold photos to them twice before, and was paid for them.

I was waiting for this 'Titan' thread to appear.

Yes, I've sold them shots before, but they are 'at it' this time.

Decline them any shots.

Whoa, €100 for one photo in a little newsletter sounds rather hefty.

"Whoa, €100 for one photo in a little newsletter sounds rather hefty."

What do you base this comment on, are you a professional photographer that sell pictures to companies on a daily basis? Or are you in a sales/purchasedepartment that handle these kinds of matters?

Jofa, I'm neither a professional photographer nor do I work for such a department. The thought just came to mind because I sold a photo to a Danish daily newspaper recently (my first one  Smile) & had no idea what to charge. So I looked up in a list by a German photographers association what they recommend to get a feel for pricing. And the fees were surprisingly low.

My post wasn't meant to offend anyone or to downgrade anyone's work.

Well, I did not make that price up.
A few weeks back, I did not know what to charge, and someone on this forum told me to check this price sheet :

http://www.photovault.com/Link/index.images/PHOTOVAULTPricing.html

As you can see, I don't even ask for that much. I consider that not being a professionnal photographer, I should not ask that much...

I think 707' fees are very reasonable. A good many of us here charge more.
I myself was surprised a while ago when I saw a list of standard prices, and I realized I was underpricing.

I didn't know that. Do you guys make a difference between smaller & larger companies? Let's say: small regional carrier = lower price, major carrier = higher price? Or is it solely based on circulation?

Thanks, Thomas

If Raytheon/Beech bought a photo from me for $50.00, is that too cheap? They said the newsletter would be shipped to over 50 countries...
