While going to a family gathering in Manhattan Beach (just south of LAX) on Saturday, I stopped by the Imperial Hill to see how things were coming along. Well, It looks like the project is FINISHED! But it's still fenced off to the public. Hopefully it won't be long before the fence is gone and it will be ours!
Some of the highlights are: little tables with attached benches to sit on, that will accommodate two people.( I saw about 6 or 7 of them) But I only saw one normal sitting bench, hopefully they will add more. A small oval area at the center of the viewing deck, that protrudes out about 5 to 7 feet over the slope. (probably more for show, than anything else) A green, waist high, chain link fence that runs from the bottom of the hill to the west, extending eastward up and over, and then down the other side.
Finally after 7 months of waiting, the Imperial Hill will be returned to the people. Thank You City Of El Segundo for thinking of US, the people who love and enjoy aviation.

I second (or is it third?) the thanks to the City of El Segundo. Nice to see them recognize that people love to watch airplanes! Now if we could only talk them into putting all those wires underground! (Just can't make some people happy can ya?)

Me too Tim, It will be good to see you and Jay once again. And this time the "Hill" will be a legitimate place to meet!
Sam: are you referring to a spot on E. Imperial Ave? (the street the hill is on) If so, is it east of the hill or west?

Hey Brian:
Defiantely we PHX and LAX guys would like to see you guys again also. Brian is there anyway that you can re-schedule your visit over the weekend or long weekend. Weekdays at least for me are aweful but I may be able to bend around those dates but not sure about the other spotters because of work days. I definately will be camping out at LAX almost of every weekend of the winter months. Some of our firm tenative dates for meet-up is Nov 8th - 9th with Paul, Tim, Clovis, and myself; and some new LAX members such as Josh May and Jason B. Then again at Thanksgiving from Nov 26th - 30th but this time PHX guys are hosting some spotters from DFW and meeting-up at LAX and spotting with the LAX guys on these dates if they are available.
Otherwise if you have any planning to come over to LAX any weekends during Fall and December starting November, then just let me know I will definately be able to meet-up and if Tim tags a long we can even split up the cost even more.

Can't really. I dunno if Tim told ya but I work for Delta now. My days off are T-W, so I'll be there the 9-10th, and I have some business on the 11-12th, but I don't think that will take up the whole day.
We have a rebid In Jan. Maybe I can get weekends...Hahaha.

Hi Brian,
It's good news to hear your coming to town. Hopefully we can work out a visit, or maybe you will be able to get over here on a weekend when Jay and Tim are here. As you say, maybe after the first of the year will work out. But I guess your not to optimistic about it though..........
Jay: Sorry I didn't respond to you sooner, but I am sure looking forward to seeing both you and Tim next month. By then the Hill should be in full swing, and hopefully the weather will be in a cooperative mood.

8th-9th November? I think that's when myself and Sam could be in town - I'll certainly be somewhere near as I'm in LA late 5th to early 11th! Could be a few photographers up on that hill that weekend!!!

I'll be leaving for San Diego in two weeks from today for official government travel orders on the U.S.S. Stennis for a month. However, like last time, there might be a possibility that we may pull back into San Diego on a friday and get weekend liberty call while in port. It might be San Diego or perhaps Bremerton, WA. If we pull back into San Diego, I could probably hitch a ride to the Amtrak station and take the train to L.A. It depends how much money I have also. I will also be in San Diego from Nov. 26 to Dec. 1. Would really like to meet up but this is spending Thanksgiving with family.

Hi there
For those of us that don't know nothing about the Imperial Hill, could anyone pls. describe where it's located and what can be seen from it? Also, what lenses would be needed to take decent shots from there? Thanks for any responses...

That's an easy one Mike!
It's located just south of the 25LR, & 7LR complex. And what makes it nice is that you are able to get some great rotation shots of the jets coming off the 25's, or ones landing on the 7's. Also, a 300mm lens will work nicely, but if you want something closer, you can go up from there. I use a Canon 100-400IS lens and sometimes add a 1.4 extender to that.

Mike, The Hill is a short hill in the city of El Sugundo. It is on the south side of the Imperial Hwy, which itself borders LAX. The city has (as you have probably read) built a small park on the hill side. There is plenty of parking on the street here. The only downside to the park is the number of electric/phone wires that can get in the way of photos. But if you are careful you can get awesome results (see Paul's photos above...)
Both the Airport Police and the El Segundo police are used to seeing spotters and photogrphers on the hill and while they do pass by frequently to my knowledge no one has had any problem.

Head west on the Imperial Highway on the south side of the airport. Not too far past the old Imperial Terminal building you'll see a hill rise up on the left side. Just past that is a stoplight (I don't recall the street name). Turn left and head into another intersection; there's a small retail area there. Turn left again and head up the hill. At the crest, houses on the right, looking down onto Imperial Highway on the left, is the viewing area. On a weekend it's pretty obvious...lots of people hanging around.
25 Alphazulu: Here are directions from the airport. To get to the Imperial Hill just take Sepulveda Blvd. south to Imperial Highway, turn right and head west until
