try this: southeast part, next to tower (western side).
You drive by the terminals and head for GAT. After GAT right turn through the tunnel, after the tunnel left and quick right to the shopping center. on Your right hand, right before the wholesale-place, there's an interesting spot. Or You park the car and cross the street (You'll see the one i mean) and stand right on the small way next to the fields. So either way they're takin off You are close to rotation point, pretty good visibility in all directions. Light should be good there.

the spot direct at the shopping-centre is too far away for ordinary lenses to shoot high-quality pictures (if you ask me). However from that place you can walk closer to the fence and take some very nice pictures though I would recommend a ladder to avoid the fence on your shots. The police is used to see photographers with ladders there - so that should be no problem. If you are interested in two examples check http://www.asstr.de/HTML/su-boy.jpg http://www.asstr.de/HTML/ec-icd.jpg
to get an impression of that spot. It`s really nice. Any further help required?

Boy it is too bad that I wasn't into photography when I was assigned to Stuttgart Army Airfield in 1992.
Could have gotten some great shots.
I am still pissed most of the base got plowed under, understand why, but still pissed.
One thing you might want to considered is going over to Echterdingen proper and taking a look at the memorial to the crash of the LZ-4. It is in this little patch of shrubs just on the other side of the autobahn from the enterance to SAAF. There is a footbridge accross there.
OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.

Life will be back in a couple of years. Starting 2005 the US army will base five MH-47G Chinook + staff (appr. 150) at STR, and there will be an anti-terror-squad training facility. New buildings have to be constructed. STR was chosen after several European-wide searching.
