I use that lens since I purchased my 10D in August, I mostly shoot with the 1.4x converter on it. If you don't need the f/2.8 capabilities then this lens is pretty much equal to that lens (which is still a bit more sharper but also way more expensive and... heavy). The lens like any L lens is well built and has a very quick [Ultrasonic] focus system (USM). I suggest you search Airsnaps and my pictures (i'm sure more people are using the lens, just can't remember who right now).
Also try checking out photo.net and giving a search on this forum, this lens has been discussed on several occasions. You might also want to check out competition such as the sigma 100-300 f/4 (used by Ben Pritchard).

I bought the Canon 70-200/4.0 L USM together with my 10D and am absolutely happy since then. Unfortunately I don't have a converter (yet), but Tim's pictures really make me want to put that on my Xmas shopping list
I am travelling a lot and therefore was looking for a relatively light (ca. 700g) yet solid lense. Having used an all-manual Canon AE-1 and a Minolta Dimage 5 before, I am absolutely astonished about the very fast and reliable auto focus of this Canon lense. Definitely wouldn't give it away any more!
Please find below two similar samples, one in bright daylight and one in low light conditions early in the morning, both with relatively low shutter speeds to see the props turning:
