Could it be that DIA will become another victim of the anti-airliner photography crowd? check the remark to this photo:

Yup. It is Greg. But, it never was really "open" again..

Bruce, the area where that photo was taken has been off limits for months due to the construction of the 6th runway. There is a lot of construction debris there, and it is clearly marked NOT to go there.

Currently the only way to safely gain access to that spot is to notify operations 48 hours in advance. After doing that, you should not be bothered. Everywhere else you still get a wave as they drive by...

It is a shame that the DEN police are so bad. Mark Abbott told me how bad they were when I was up there in August (?) this year. What a shame. At least at DFW they just hassle you and run your license through their database. Still what a waste of time, though..........

Not sure what Mark told you, but being told to leave a clearly marked 'posted' area is not outrageous in my book. Same as getting a ticket for parking in a no parking zone.

Mark and Jay must have had some odd experiences while spotting at DIA. As a former Denver resident I never encountered anything but a wave from "the man." At anything I would have my DL run thru a check and be told to stay warm and enjoy my day. The "Hill" was always a *Must Notify Ops In Advance* location, and failure to do so, obviously would be frowned upon by the authorities. I would hope the current Denver spotters and visitors would be respectful of this and not ware out our welcome.

Just my opinion....

It's alright guys! DEN is probably one of the most spotter-friendly major airports in the country! We don't have that many problems here, that hill has been "closed" for a while now...

Great pic Hisham!

Ohhhh.... I did not realize that was from the Hill. I guess the Photog did not call ahead. it does look as if he was a little elevated above the runway level.

I remember my visit to DIA in summer '01 and I drove around to the north side i think, it was a large deserted like area around the airport, just fields and such. And i drove down some empty road looking for a spot to shoot and I thought, there is no way anyone can get a decent shot at this airport  Big grin  Big grin  Big grin

Vafi called it right...Denver has to be the most spotter friendly airport in the US. Anyone that says differently has to be doing something wrong...Ryan

Hi all,
I wasn't implying they're cracking on spotters. It seems I was trespassing a hazardous area (even though I was half a mile away from the construction site). But they told me that I can't even get permission to be there. Jeff, how did you find out about the 48h notice?

Thanks!

Hisham.

Its not only Denver. Last Sunday I was planing to spend some time at CLT's Airport Overlook. The weather was great, winds in my favor (They were landing from the west), but there was one small thing that pissed me off. The overlook was closed! Around 5-6 other cars were parked on the shoulder and people were standing right at the fence watching airplanes landing.

Its really sad that they are doing this crap to us again.

The troubles I was referring to was regarding the repeated visits (many of them pretty rude) by Denver PD while along the rental car road during the winter of 2002-2003. Apparently I'm the only person who has ever had trouble there...

Mark,

It also depends on the individual policeman. A minority will try to get you to leave no matter what just because they don't want anybody hanging around the fence.

I've had many recent encounters with several policemen on the car rental road. None of them asked to leave at any point. It's just that if they receive a tip from a driver, they are forced to investigate it. If you call ops in advance, they won't even stop by. I'm hoping that would work on 16L too. Jeff?

Hisham.

It's worth a try. I can't ensure it won't happen. I just spent two hours on rental car row down near Avis, witha Tripod! no problems.....

That is what I was talking about Mark! I remember you telling me how hassled you were at that rental spot location and the location is just an awesome area for photography. I want to come back and just try and get some shots at that rental car spot anyway!!

Make sure you guys get out on Wednesday. Should be mostly sunny skies after a decent snowfall. Unfortunately, I'm heading out this afternoon to Huntsville on a business trip so you guys will have to tell me about it. This is the second storm of the season and it will mark the second time I've been out of the state when it has came through...

I called airport ops to get permission to access the hill. My request was denied because "they didn't know who I am especially under the current circumstances". So It's a security issue. The construction site is not the whole story. Like I said I was very far from the construction anyway.

I am wondering if I should ask about the hill... I've never been there at all, no pictures from there for me. I do have an airport badge, so I wonder if they'll let me stay there. I'll keep you posted. Unfortunately, now I am sick and won't be doing photography for two days while I recover.

Alex.
