Are the video `files' that the S602 produces/stores just meant to be fed to a TV or VCR? None of my computer programs that should read .avi files seem to read them. No help from the manual.....

As .avi files can be compressed in what seems to be a myriad different ways there are codecs that handle that.
I suggest you do a google search for Fuji S602 and codec. You should find something useful to install.
