Guys,

Warsaw spotters group [epwa_spotters] was invited to the TV show talking about the airport security. In order to prepare better for the discussion we would like to get the information about relationship between the spotters and airport/security authorities in the places all over the world.

Specifically we are looking for the following;

1. How the airport authorities treat you at your airport?
2. Is there a cooperation between spotters and police/security at the airport. If there is, how does it look like?
3. Does the security authorities sees your presence at the airport as the “good thing” for the security? Why?
4. Does the airport provide some facilities for spotting (like wholes in the wall or designated spotting spots)? If yes, do you have a picture of that? Can you send me?
5. Is your local spotting community organized in any formal (or not formal) way?
6. How many spotters there is at your airport (estimated)?

Of course we have some idea about situation at few airports but we are looking for more data.
Any information would be appreciated.

For my home-airport Ostend:

1. As normal human beings, no ID control.
2. No
3. There's no specific policy. There's the advantage of a 'smaller' (regional) airport: most of the security people know our cars, some spotters or relatives of spotters work on the airport and provide info on traffic.
4. No specific facilities but good spots along public roads, terrace was closed in 1991.
5. No.
6. 40-50 locals.

For my home airport, Borlange, things are very friendly  Smile

1. Very well, I am, according to the people in the tower, good PR  Smile
2. What police? The security manager recognizes me before I even spot him  Big grin
3. As I said, I'm good PR, they also know I'm harmless, I give them tips about broken fences and such, and I also know what I should not take pictures of (old military stuff)
4. It has quite a large terrace (for such a small airport), it's visible along the entire terminal building in the left shot, and the right one is shot from up there.

6. As I wrote in #5, we are only two that does this kind of mad things all the time, although the airport was well visited when Novair had one of their training days on a weekend, both at the terrace as well as out in the "terrain"  Smile

Very well. No problems at all.

2. Is there a cooperation between spotters and police/security at the airport. If there is, how does it look like?
No, not an official cooperation that I know of anyway.

3. Does the security authorities sees your presence at the airport as the “good thing” for the security? Why?
No. If they do it does not show!

4. Does the airport provide some facilities for spotting (like wholes in the wall or designated spotting spots)? If yes, do you have a picture of that? Can you send me?
Yes! There is an official observation platform on the terminal which is huge. Next to that there are 2 official spots alongside two of the runways. At runway 06/24 you can get an uninterupted view over runway 06/24 with no fences to bock the view. A small levy keeps you away from the runway. The (military) police regularly drives by to make sure no idiots abuse this. Sometimes they make a friendly chat to the enthiousiasts there. I think they trust on the spotters to report anything strange. I know that if I see something suspicious I'll report it!
There are various other spots along the airport perimeter that are used and local autorities don't mind so. As long as some areas are clear (crash gates etc) and you don't park your car on dangerous places.
A picture of the viewing will be send, it isn't A.net quality but it does capture the area quite well.  Big grin

5. Is your local spotting community organized in any formal (or not formal) way?
There is a spotters organization in the Netherlands but I am not a member of them. I can therefore not tell if they have regular contact with the airport autorities and/or police.

6. How many spotters there is at your airport (estimated)?
There are a few dozen regulars and most of the time there are also a handful of foreigners (UK/BE/DE/FR) who mostly stick to the official areas. Next to them the official terrace at the terminal attracts a lot of meeters and greeters and people bringing their kids for a cheap day out!  Smile

Nice. There is a spotters Association in Portugal which is known by the airport authorities.

2. Is there a cooperation between spotters and police/security at the airport. If there is, how does it look like?
We have the direct phone numbers of both the police station at the airport and the airport operations department. should we see anything or anyone unusuall at the airport we'll get in touch with them.

3. Does the security authorities sees your presence at the airport as the “good thing” for the security? Why?
No feedback on this area

4. Does the airport provide some facilities for spotting (like wholes in the wall or designated spotting spots)? If yes, do you have a picture of that? Can you send me?
We have no dedicated facilities at any of the airports. In the past there were viewing galleries, which are now closed. Wholes on the fence aren't allowed and will be closed by the airport. Ladders are welcome. (strange)

5. Is your local spotting community organized in any formal (or not formal) way?
Yes. There is APEA - Portuguese Aviation Enthusiasts Association. It was created in 1998 and is the only Association of its kind in Portugal. We are recognized by the Air Force, Army, Navy and Civil Aviation Authority, as well as the Airport Management Company.

6. How many spotters there is at your airport (estimated)?

Between 30-40. In Portugal, I would say 200-300.

I have not been spotting too many times, but once I was kicked out and have had no problems other times.

2. Is there a cooperation between spotters and police/security at the airport. If there is, how does it look like?
None that I know of.

No it does not. The security can be a bit paranoid at least in the US, so I believe police see spotters as suspicious individuals that pose some threat, but a minimal one.

4. Does the airport provide some facilities for spotting (like wholes in the wall or designated spotting spots)? If yes, do you have a picture of that? Can you send me?
No. I use a parking garage.

5. Is your local spotting community organized in any formal (or not formal) way?
Not that I know of.

6. How many spotters there is at your airport (estimated)?
I've never seen any other spotters there, but I know there are a few that have pictures on this website. I would guess five or ten, perhaps more, perhaps less.

From Houston IAH and Hobby:

1. How the airport authorities treat you at your airport?
Reasonably well. The HAS (Houston Airport System) had to close off 2 photo spots which were near the approach and departure ends at IAH, however they have publicly stated in newspapers and radio media that spotters are welcome at both airports.

2. Is there a cooperation between spotters and police/security at the airport. If there is, how does it look like?
Not yet, however we are running a test coming up during the Super Bowl at Hobby Airport where some 50-100 British, Dutch and American spotters will be centrally located to watch the corporate jets and Southwest 737s, etc. operate. The HAS there at Hobby has given out the phone number to call to inform them whenver you are at the airport spotting to help ease any security concerns or calls that they may get about our "suspicious" activity.

3. Does the security authorities sees your presence at the airport as the “good thing” for the security? Why?
Again, we'll see how the test goes, but in the long run, it will be a good thing.
The director at IAH has made gentle hints that makes me think he's thinking of us as a help not a hinderence.

4. Does the airport provide some facilities for spotting (like wholes in the wall or designated spotting spots)? If yes, do you have a picture of that? Can you send me?
No pictures to send, however the facilities that IAH/HAS wants us to use are the terminal parking garage rooftops and at HOU, the parking lot in centerfield along with two spots near the end of the runways.

5. Is your local spotting community organized in any formal (or not formal) way?
Informal I'd say. There is a yahoo group for iahspotters and that's as formal as it gets for the time being.

6. How many spotters there is at your airport (estimated)?
25 is a good estimate for the Houston area.

The first time a friend and I (from MSP) went spotting here, we were interrogated and filed a report with the local police. Thanks to a disgruntled Mesaba ramper, we now both have Suspicious Activity charges on our records. After talking to some of the right people we now just stop by operations and say 'hi' to let them know we will be around.

2. Is there a cooperation between spotters and police/security at the airport. If there is, how does it look like?
Not really, we just say when we get there where we will be. At times we have been escorted on to the ramp.

3. Does the security authorities sees your presence at the airport as the %93good thing%94 for the security? Why?
They were scared of people taking picture of planes (DC-9 and Saab) at first but now they have come to an 'acceptance' of it. Maybe the pictures we donated that hang on their walls helped.

Not really a designated area. It is more just space that is undeveloped.

5. Is your local spotting community organized in any formal (or not formal) way?
Yes, we have formed an organization at the University. We spot diverted flights at GFK and travel to larger airports for more activity.

6. How many spotters there is at your airport (estimated)?
Our organization nearly owns this airport. Most of the time the Photog. to plane ratio is 5:1. We do have a dozen or so listed members.
