I saw a few digital images of yours on the JetPhoto website. I am
looking for a picture of Beirut International Airport. Our firm had done
some work for them in the past, and I wanted to accompany a write-up
with a picture of the outside of the terminal, or perhaps the airport
interior. Can you let me know if you have anything suitable that I might
look at? I would also be interested in knowing your fee for a
medium-resolution digital image approximately 4'x4'.

You have to find out if they are making money from your shot, ask them how big the print will be, how many copies? The usual stuff. Once you have that information, post it here and I am sure that some of the more experienced members will help you.

I just realized something. According to the message, they want the picture to be 4 feet by 4 feet. I hope that was a mistake and meant 4 inches by 4 inches.
There is no way my Scan Dual II can enlarge photos to 4 feet by 4 feet. Even if I could, the quality wouldn't be very good....

Dont think they meant that. Not even a top end digital SLR can produce images of 4 feet wide and long. You should be ok when it is 4x4 inches with your scanner.

I'm still not sure if they are using it for profit purposes or not. I guess they are since they would in a sense use the picture for marketting purposes. I can easily do 4 inches by 4 inches.
Anyways, here is the big question. How much should I charge them?
I want to still own the copyrights of the photo.

Don't forget, you needn't just try to get a financial reward.
You might want to suggest a free flight or get some their own promotional gear like mousemats, pins/badges....stuff like that....

I'm really not an expert which is why I need your help. Perhaps $100 is way too cheap, or perhaps $100 is way too expensive. I just don't know. I have never ever sold a photograph......

I think its reasonable, I would have asked for a bit more.. A large job such as an airport terminal construction will undoubtedly open peoples eyes and this company will get more business. So, in a sense, they will be making money using your shot. I would have charged $150.00 and then negotiated from there...

Of course, they make big profit. And the government of Lebanon is paying lots of money to have this consulting firm work for them. You probably saved the marketing dept the hassle of finding a photographer in Beirut, send him for an assignment at the airport for a couple of hours, the exchanges of pics back and forth between the US and Lebanon, with all the precautions to be taken because of copyright rights, etc... Call a professional photographer in Beirut and ask him how much he would charge for that (don't tell him why you are inquiring) it is my best advice!
$100 looks like a tip to me!
When I was a teenager, was part of the entourage of State trips, on several occasions I actually sold some of my shots for the fun of it. Back then, I was charging $100, but then again it was 15 years ago!
