OK so here's the deal. I promised myself I would travel to other airports this year. My first trip is to LAX the weekend of Feb 14-15. Hopefully the weather Gods will smile on me. Even if it rains, I will go anyway.
I know all about Imperial Hill and plan to do some sessions from there, but I need info about locations where I can get closer to arrivals/departures for engine detail and 3/4 shots (not boring parked a/c or side shots). I will take only my 100-400 IS L lens, which hopefully will be enough to bring the action in close.
I've arranged to hook up with a few of the locals, but sometimes a fresh pair of eyes can offer much insight. Any info you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Same here, I'll be there on Feb 5-6 and am hoping for some pointers too. I'm getting a 2x converter specially for this trip (my poor 100-400L is going to be reduced to a 400 f/9.2, so the sun better be out) to try out.

Thanks for your kind offer. I will give you a call if the time permits. I have an extremely short layover in LAX (barely 48 hrs) so was only planning to do a shoot in the afternoon of the 4th. I may be departing LAX on the 5th now so I probably would not have the time to join you.
Thanks and the previous problem you mentioned has long since been cleared as far as I'm concerned. Hope your trip is going well, look forward to seeing your shots.

You all are going too soon for me. A few guys and I are coming from the University of North Dakota to LAX Feb. 20-22. We are going just for the spotting. Drop an e-mail email@example.com or get to me through my profile.

If you are flying the 3rd Inargural flight into LAX, then be prepared getting a log sheet full of Q by my friend Luke Chittock, who is a amid flyer and enthusasist from Perth who booked on the first flight from SIN.
I won't be at LAX that day but I believe it will be shoted all over...watch out the LAX Ops car chasing the A345

Are you going to be shooting a2a shots somewhere this summer coincidentally? Let me know because I'd love to do that one day. And since I want to go to the states for a couple of days this summer we might meet up.

I heard from another friend that Luke will be on the flight, along with another spotter friend who is accompanying him. I was going to ask for some shots of us landing but I guess that would be unnecessary now. I will try to catch a shot of the ops car you mentioned. Tell him to come up on the right side of the cockpit if he can! I'll get a clear shot from there.
Btw, this is not the first time theA345 has visited LAX. Most of you probably missed 9V-SGA on her delivery flight TLS-LAX-SIN on Dec 31. We arrived about 10pm on the 31st.
Anyways, will advertise for more folks to shoot us on arrival in the main forum.

Nah, we're gonna be beyond te airport fences. Mainly Imperial Hill, In N Out parking garage/park, and Lincoln Bridge. My flight arrives LAX on Feb. 20 from Dulles in the evening, so photography won't be likely. My friend is picking me up and we're going straight to the Embassy Suites Hotel.

Well Wietse, it is a crap shoot most of the time, today we did 3 shore lines and 1 LAX mini route trying to get something, most of the time we got empty handed but were so close, due to the wrong timing, there were 747s takeoffs only after we went pass over LAX for Santa Monica and Hawthorn each way.
Luck came at the end of the day, oh god, what a plane we got! A340-600 of China Eastern...but I can tell you on average 1/10 occasion you get something that nice (Derek told me)....keep in touch if traffic are busy the tower So Cal approach may denied the corridor access or limit the Cessna over 4500 feet instead of 3500 feet. Also keep in touch from a Cessna on a taped window shooting down is extremly irritating, against strong wind and lot of movements making photos blurry easily....it really wasn't easy as anyone can imagine but if you decided to try I can help you to arrange when you have your dates set.

Sorry I couldn't meet you up, but I know one of my buddy in ops car did get a video shoot of your plane arrived on 3rd, which I was in DFW tower and we also montiored your plane landed somewhat 80 mins or more early!!
On the 5th I got back to LAX with my family and quickly got a lucky visit of the A345 at Int'l around 5pm, and SQ29 also came in and parked next to it. I may post the pic later on but I like those larger crew rest area and the table where pilot can put their laptop at.

It was a pretty good couple of days in LAX, the Wx was just gorgeous and everything was nicely lit up. Hope you liked the Leadership, she certainly created quite a stir with everyone from ATC to spotters.
Mr. BN747, I believe that's whom you're referring to, did indeed come alongside us on the taxi. The water canon salute was a special experience, although it did ruin any further opportunities to shoot out of the window as it left water stains all over. If you have any shots of the salute, you would have seen the little rainbow just overhead the flightdeck, it was amazing. I was lucky enough to get some nice prints of that moment.

I'm pretty excited about LAX next week on Feb. 20-23. Only to suffer a week from work and money wise, i am seriously gone broke but it's all worthwhile. Can't wait to try out my new Nikon 80-400mm VR lense in which I ordered today. Looking forward to this.
