I have bought and recieved my D30, which is a perfeclty mint example and I'm thrilled. However, now i need to get me a tele photo and I can't make up my mind. My price range is 600 tops and absolute. I'm thinking about the Canon 70-200 F4L just because everyone seems to love it. I"m worried about only being able to use a 1.4x and stay withing the perscribed autofocus(and yes i know the tape trick). I'm also worried if I need to extra F stop for other areas of photography. However, I could always just supplemnt it with an 85mm F1.8 later.
Next choice would be the 80-200 f2.8L. I like the idea of this lens and everything about it really, just having trouble finding one optically perfect for under my price range. My last option is the 100-300 f/4 ex sigma. I figure if i'm going to be taking on tele convertors to my other zooms, why not starts at 300mm and f/4. For now i'm leaning towards the F4L and then trying to supplment it with a 1.4x convertor and maybe a 300mm F4L down the road.

Mine was 600 too lol.... Then I decided I wouldnt be happy with that lens, so I went for the Canon 100-400mm L IS. I figured I would be spending more money down the line, replacing the lens I wasnt going to be happy with. I do have the Canon 70-200mm F/4 L also... Great lens.

The price on the 80-200 has really seen a jump latley. I know about the convertors, you ave to use the kenko convertors which seems to produce fairly sharp results
Question for those who own 200mm.
Since this lens is an F4, i would only be attaching a 1.4 convertor
with 280mm/4somethingmmeffective do you find that short focal length restrictive for a lot of airports.
I'm in ATL which is pretty much a worthless airport, but PDK the bizav airpot is incredible but with my 3mp D30, i don't have a lot of cropping power so...I don't know.

I really wouldn't be so concerned about AF - the 70-200 is quite easy to use in MF mode. Even without convertors, there are always going to be situations where using manual focus is quicker and more reliable than AF, and it is a skill every photographer should acquire.
Even though the D30 will technically AF with the 70-200 & 1.4x, it will be slow and probably unreliable on moving subjects.
Through necessity (2x & 300mm f4 10D/D60) I often use manual focus, however, last weekend I was shooting with just the 1.4x convertor, so decided to let the AF have a go. Overall results were much worse on moving aircraft than had I stuck to MF. Never again.

Thanks alot. So i guess that seems to lean towards the 70-200 F4L. Since most aviation photography, in my experience, is down at f8+ i guess that i could tack on a 2x if i wanted to. I think i'm gunna go with the F4L and later maybe "upgrade" to the 2.8 or buy a 300mm to supplement it. I think it's me being greedy wating the extra stop.

If, as you say, most of your photography is at f8, then the f2.8 is a luxury you probably don't need - not only do you pay a penalty in price, but also a significant hike in size and weight. Optically, the Canon f4 is as good as the f2.8 (or as near as makes no difference).
Practice with the f4 and a 2x convertor, then if and when you buy the 300, you'll be in a position to shot at 600m!

Regarding autofocus, I am practicing on AF now esp in low light in door. Just wondering, for moving subjects (havent tried yet), after you have gotten the focus right and the subj is right, do you have to adjust it much when the aircraft becomes closer and as you zoom in and out? Any tips or tricks in getting good at MF and sharp results?

No. What matters is the maximum effective aperture for all except Canon pro cameras this needs to be f5.6 for AF to work. Regardless of what aperture you select, AF is done with the lens diaphram wide open - it only closes down at the moment of exposure.

In theory, if you are in AF Servo mode, focus should be retained on moving subjects. In practice how well this works depends on how good a focus locak the camera has made, and the speed and angle of the subject. All systems have their limitations!

Lots of practice! MF is easier with telephoto than normal or wide angle (becuase the subject more clearly pops in and out of focus) so start there. The trick is small movements, but almost continuous movements of the focus ring - by rocking the focus short and long, the sweet spot becomes obvious. With a good lens (like the 70-200 f4) the focus ring is light but precise and can be adjusted with just one finger. A light touch and small movements is the trick.

Have you already considered the D30's crop-factor (1.6x)? With the 70-200, you'll basically have the equivalent of a 112-320 f/4. With a 1.4x converter, that becomes the equivalent of 157-448mm. Quite adequate coverage for most aviation photography.
