Hi, I am going to buy a 300D (digi rebel) quite soon.
I've made my choice for a 75-300 lens (IS USM if I can find a cheap one), but I'm still not sure of what to buy as a wide angle.

Should I buy the 300D pack with the 18-55 lens ? It could be interesting financially, but is it worth it ? I've heard comments that the EFS 18-55 lens was not that good. I might want to use that one for 'close' action shots (like Hatton Cross spot at LHR, which for those who don't know the spot gives you roughly the same distance as SXM...) - however, comments I've hear are that that lens might not be fast enough...

Now, the problem I see if going for another lens is that the price might skyrocket, and I could have some difficulties finding another (good) 18 something lens - I might have a good 28-80 lens for instance, but considering the 1.6 factor of a Canon DSLR, it means I would be getting a 45-130 lens, which might be too much for a wide angle.

So... I am now waiting for your valuable input (just remember that though I've had 3 digicams already, I've never had or used neither SLR, nor DSLR (well, not actually true, I might have shot about 30 reflex pictures  Wink/being sarcastic ))

707, going to bed now

to go wide, you need something like a 12-24 on a DSLR, but I have had good results with a 15-30, too.

You can't go wrong with the canon ef 17-40F4L lens or the 16-35F2.8L, i have used both and own the 17-40 and find it to be a marvelous lens!!!

17-40 is attractiv, but as stated above, I am new to the SLR/DSLR world, and at 700$ (price at BHPhoto), it seems a bit expensive to me, like giving jam to pigs, as we say in France.

I am not looking at an ultra wide, but something wide to begin with, in a 300-400$ rice range.

Do you need a zoom? You could save a bit of cash and probably get better quality with a good prime. Personally I love my 14mm Sigma, but the 20mm Sigma or Canon is a sensible lens, both high quality and not too hard on the pocket.

Cheers,

Colin

Probably true, if 707CMF is having every penny of that ~700$...

The Sigma 17- 35/2.8-4.0 IF Asph. EX costs about 450 euros, Tamron AF 19- 35/3.5-4.5 250 euros and Tokina 19-35/3.5-4.5 AF almost as low as 200 euros. I guess one of these would be the choice, though I don't know about the quality (don't expect too much, except maybe of the Sigma one).
