Heya fellow spotters of KMSP. Just wondering where you go to spot planes, and the best locations. I always go to the long parking lot by the employee parking lot A. Do you go there>? Also I go to a frontage road at the end of 12R, so the aircraft are about 500ft above my head! Also, wondering how much you go there? I go there alot, maybe sometime, we can chat. Let me know. thanks

I have been photographing at MSP for seven years now. My regular spots now are an overlook off of Pilot Knob road. It is on a bike trail along the Minnesota River. There is a Lloyd's BBQ factory across the road. I also go to the park in the southeast corner of 62 and 77. I believe that is by the frontage road you mentioned.

I am out of town for two months but spend a lot of time at either of those locations.

I should be home the end of April and don't have to leave again til the end of May. A Saturday in early May may be good for an aviation photographer's get together. It has been a while since I had one specifically devoted to photography.

Hey Gary,

Thanks for sending me the pictures of the fire trucks and Russian transport. Great pics! You don't see too many of those transport arriving to MSPBig grin Shoot me an e-mail when you have the time set for get together in May.

Garage for me, but when it gets a little bit warmer I'll try to get a spot under the 30L approach. Last summer the grassy field under the 30L lights were filled with 40+ people!!

40+ people!? I'm raising the BS flag on that one. How long were you there watching them? The Hennepin County sheriff, Airport Police, and the Air Force patrol that area regularly and have said that they do not welcome spotters there.

FYI, there was an AN-124 here last weekend. It is coming back here in a few days. Last I checked, that was Russian built.  Wink/being sarcastic

If you are looking for places to watch planes here, why don't you drive around the perimeter? The airport is not that big, and the spots that you find will most likely be better than the one 40+ lemmings go to.

Originality is important at a smaller hub like MSP. We get so many Northwest tails that its important to mix up in aviation photography.

Continental (John Muzic), you receive the award for least original photos at MSP. I'd take AviatorTJ's suggestion and explore the airport a little more. The ramps are ok places to photography, but it gets boring after a while.

CV63 (Ken Cheung), receives the award for most photos at MSP (aka spam). But Dan Hornseth was catching up during the winter. Too bad Mark Abbott isn't still around MSP. He had quality photos of various aircraft from various locations.

Tim,

There's no need to criticize other people photos. If they are accepted to this website that should be good enough for anyone. No one here at this forum likes to hear their photo are not original or are Spam. When did this thread make a left turn? This thread is about where to spot at MSP, not who doesn't have the most original photos taken at MSP.

I would not necessarily say they are good enough for "anyone." There are many photographers, besides myself, who have had their best shots rejected from airliners. If people judge the quality of their shots by what they upload, they seriously need to reconsider their situation.

Sorry Ken, didn't mean to get you fired up. My post was meant to encourage rather then discourage you. You do take some good shots, you've got many shots better than mine. I've got a measly 6 shots from MSP.

I'm trying to get the aviation photgraphers to improve themselves at MSP. Not just you and John Muzic, but the others too (like Dan Hornseth). We've gotten into the routine of just shooting the same planes from the same angles.

I try and keep the MSP photographers a head up for charters and diversions into MSP (via mspupdate.com) so that'll help to mix up the planes that are uploaded to airliners.net from MSP. Now its the turn of the MSP photographers to step up to the plate and try out some new spots for the planes that do come here regularly. Take TJ's advice, go around the airport and discover spots. We're lucky to have an understanding Airport Police that allow us to photograph almost always in peace.
