I believe that is the same error I had with my Sigma 17-35mm lens on my D30. It only happened once. I just turned it off, took out the batteries for a few mins. After that it was fine, hasn't happened again (happened about 7 months ago).

I had the same code appear on my 10D when using an older Sigma lens I'd bought several years ago. It would allow me to take one shot then lock up and display the error code. It seems to happen when the camera alters the aperture setting of the lens, you can check this by setting the camera in aperture priority mode and then picking the smallest aperture (high f number) and then press the depth of field preview button - the camera will lock up and indicate error 99.
Here in the UK Sigma are pretty good and re-chipped my lens in 3 days. It will cost you more if you didn't own the lens from new so my advice would be to take the lens back to the shop and wait until you find a newer version, or get the shop to cough up for the re-chipping fee.
I use the 170-500mm, it's a good lens for the money, just don't expect Canon L quality shots.

I have only had an error99 with the 10D/170-500 combo once, and that was taking multiple shots one after another (airshow) in fairly hot conditions (31 C+ with the camera and lens in direct sunlight). In lulls in the display program I put the camera and lens in the esky to cool things down and it worked OK again until it got hot again. A week later at another airshow in much cooler conditions everything worked OK.

get onto the Sigma HQ in Melbourne and they will rechip it for free.
If you have a distributor in your state they will post it to Melb for you.
Great service from them.
Just out of interest is the performance of the 170-500 or 50-500 better at the 500mm position when compared to one another?
I got some good rsults at 500mm with the 50-500 but i am wondering if the performance of the 170-500 is better at long range.
