I got this rejection this morning and it was because the photo looked overall too dark. I can't understand how this makes any sense because it certainly doesn't look dark to me. Shooting it with good morning sun backs up even further.

I think it is indeed a little too dark. While your highlights are right up at the edge of your histogram, your contrast is a bit too much causing the majority of the photo to fall too far to the left. I would also suggest that there needs to be a bit more space off the nose of the aircraft. Otherwise it is a fine photo. If you have the original photo little less tightly cropped, I think it is completely salvageable.

Honestly, I still find that the rejected photo looks fine on my computer and even confirmed that result when I showed it to other photographers. I just can't see why it appears dark to you guys.
But I spent a few minutes in Photoshop and adjusted the brightness/contrast, exposure curves, levels and I toned up the image. To me it appears a little brighter but maybe it may just do the trick to get in on the next upload.
