Okay, hopefully, I'll have my new EOS 1D Mark II when I travel to the MIA/FLL at the end of this month.

Can you please tell me where the good locations are at both of these airports and also, what to do while I am there, besides taking photos? Any cool airplane stores around, any good locations to eat, etc?

What should I avoid? Any hassles with the local police at either location these days? Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

Jay

I was at the FLL 9L area recently, its open currently but should the alert level go to orange than expect it to be closed...there is almost always a police car parked discreetly away from the area but watching over the parking lot, and occasionally a cop or BCAD will make a pass through the area...

To get there, from I-95 get off at Griffin Road and head east, and I believe its the 2nd traffic light, Perimeter Road...Make a left and then another immediate left (the D terminal will be visible)...the perimeter fence is now on your right hand side and a berm inside the fence will soon block your view...continue straight on perimeter road as it curves around past the 9R threshold, past the Gulfstream International hangar, and go straight, past the control tower and executive terminal until you can go straight no more, at which point make a left (at this intersection you should be able to see runway 9L and the perimeter fence there, and tree-shaded field)...continue on that road until you can go no further (you'll be right next to I-95), make a right, and then another right at the sign that says "Aircraft Viewing Area", and park in the lot somewhere...you have arrived!!

Greg,

Thanks for the tips on how to get there. Are there any better times to be at FLL in terms of catching any International flights, etc?

Are there even any International flights there? I am just totally clueless aobut that airport.

Also, any suggestions for MIA?

Thanks!

Jay

FLL - 9L park or top of Hibiscus garage over the terminal.
MIA - famous place called "the holes".
Go to Atr Bret's webpage for more details:

MIA and FLL (more so MIA though) are known to be some of the last remaining photography friendly airports. Because we are not in a increased (well I guess the level is always increased, but not to the point it was a few weeks ago-- I don't know the whole color code) the normal MIA police officers are there (I cannot really speak for FLL). They know the whole deal and support the photography, as long as you shoot in designated or known areas (the aforementioned holes and the El Dorado area on 9R, see Art's site). Hopefully you come when there is high pressure because then the 9s, 8 and 12 are used which offer the best opportunities. When landings are from the east (when low pressure systems move through), you sort of need to search for spots on the oppositte side but it can be done with a little time. So just stick to open spots and the designated areas and you will be fine.

What else to do? Well it depends on your interests, being a teenager, we love going to South Beach where they have awesome bars and beaches and that is where the nightlife really is. They are also known for their food. Check out places like Espanola Way, South Point, Lincoln Rd., etc (all on the beach). During the day you can check out Metrozoo and the Seaquarium or go to the beach. Miami is really touristy so you have plenty of options.

The only good aviation stores I know of it Atlantic Models (try them on mapquest). They sell awesome models, obviously, and some apparel too. There used to be a store next to the airport which was amazing but unfortunatley they weren't generating enough business and were forced to shut down.

Have fun!

There are two other aviation stores within a block of MIA that you should consider.

One is "Tally Ho" models on 36th street. You enter from the rear. Their address is 5391 NW 36th St, and the phone number is (305) 871-4650.
They primarily sell flight uniforms, but they also have a nice selection of 1/100th models as well as several cases full of smaller diecast models.

The other is "Just Plane Crazy", which I highly recommend. Their address is: 1200 NW 72nd Ave. Phone number is (305) 477-7163. It is on the southwest corner of MIA near the "holes" mentioned above. They have models, books, magazines, etc.

Just to let you know - information at "the Holes" leaves no doubt "Photography allowed on this area ONLY" so you may be hassled other places.

Support Airliners.net - become a First Class Member!

Two corrections and one question:

1. Just Plane Crazy closed forever in January due to drop off in walk-in traffic since 9/11. They continue to operate via phone, mail order and internet sales. Pauline no longer has the horrible commutes on the Palmetto Expressway every morning and every evening - good for her!

2. There's a shorter way to the FLL view park than driving all the way east to get on Perimeter Road. Get off I-95 at Griffin, go west, not east, to Ravenswood Road where there is a traffic light. Make a right and go north to I think the next traffic light (look for general aviation sign and arrow pointing right). Make a right, go up a steep bridge over I-95 and make a left (north) at the first stop sign after the bridge. Make another left (west) at the first stop sign. The road will turn to the right (north) just before you hit the I-95 fenceline on the east side of I-95. The parking lot is a couple of hundred feet east on a street to the right at the corner where the animal control building and parking lot is.

3. If young Ryan is a teenager as per his post, what is he doing in bars on South Beach? Hahaha, just wondering. Is he using a phony ID or what?

The police car is empty, not even a dummy plastic cop on there. But yes the car is always there watching descreetly for those potential terrorists with the long lenses, ladders and in need of a tan! haha..

Hahaha Don I was wondering the same thing...

Really, some good connections to get into those being a teenager I would imagine! Nevermind that kind of entertainment is not exactly cheap either, especially in South Beach. But it's ok, I'll pretend I never read this Ryan : )

Hmm...never noticed it was empty, but now that I think about it that would probably make sense...but still a real cop does drive through every now and then...

Oops...guess that one slipped. Of course I don't have an ID (...) but if I have a beard I can sometimes pass for 21. Most of the time they don't really care. Anyways, it can get expensive, but hey, if you are on vacation you forget about money, especially after an hour or two at the bar... Big grin.

Any photographers in the MIA/FLL care to join me on a photo excursion while I am down there? I am also going to be in town for the Air-Sea Show.
