I have been reading all these posts about how it seems like everyone is getting harassed at their local airports. I have been a plane spotter so to speak all my life and just recently, I have been a plane photography .I just joined A-net 3 weeks ago and still haven’t gotten any pictures accepted, can’t seem to figure out my camera. Anyways, I have been spotting at FLL for years and they never seemed to mind. Even after they completed expansion they included a very nice size viewing area along 9L/27R and a very loud speaker so everyone can hear the tower. And since 9/11 they do close it down when the threat level increases and then they reopen it. I usually go on the weekends and sit on top of my truck; heck people even walk up to the fence and snap shots. The Sheriffs dept swings by about every hour to make sure everything is ok and I have yet to see them even talk to anyone. I guess I /we are either lucky or spoiler with our plane spotting area. But it does go to show airport officials that it is possible that Airports and plane spotters can get along. If anyone would like a few pictures of this so the can show their local airport I would more then glad to take some this weekend.

That spotting area is awesome. I was down in FLL in February and went over there a couple times, I think I may have even seen you on top of your truck. You guys are lucky to have such a nice place, the only airport close to me is EWR which sucks. I have yet to go to LGA or JFK but I hear they are not bad.

Yes, we are a lucky bunch down here in South Florida. It is not just limited to FLL. Both MIA and PBI offer good spots and no hassle. I am either taking photos from the viewing area or the top of the parking garage. Most often it is the latter. Police will patrol the area from time to time, mostly just waving. Still, I have been interrogated by the odd cop, mostly just responding to complaints from passengers below. They are very friendly about it. MIA is the also the same way though I have yet to be stopped.

Sometimes when im at the 9L FLL spotting area. If ur near the gate they will say something. One parks and recreation guy came by and said I must be 6 feet from the gate. What the F*** does the 6 come from. Stupid parks and rec jackass, just power happy. I'll be in the FLL area June 22nd to July 29th, so if anyone wants to meet up, that would be great.

Damnit Ed, I'll just miss you down there...going to be there June 18-21 probably and then sometime in August as well, though I'll likely be busy for the August trip as we are having visitors for a few weeks then...the 6 ft. thing is BS, when I go I stand right in front of the fence so I can poke my lens through (it just fits), most of the time, and cops and airport ops that drive by dont say a thing to me...

I recently received a letter from a photographer that had paid a recent visit to FLL. He mentioned that you were allowed to shoot thru the fence but if you have a ladder it must be six feet from the fence. I guess they are afraid you might use the ladder to get over the fence. They must figure that if the ladder is six feet away you can't jump that far!
