Dear friends,
It is with much sorrow and deep regret that I write to inform you of the passing of a photographer and enthusiast that would be well known to most of you. Mr Frank Schaefer passed away in Sydney, aged 34, on Friday May 21st 2004 after a short battle with illness. His parents arrived from Germany earlier in the day and were with Frank and the time of his passing.
His most untimely death has left a hole in the spotting community here in Sydney and I don't think it would be wrong to say around the world as well. With 9,931 photos online at http://www.airliners.net his passion for aviation and photography was clearly obvious and he enjoyed nothing more than travelling the world, and more recently Australia, chasing anything that flew to grab a Kodachrome 64 slide or twenty of it! His last trip was to Japan in February and this had long been a place he had wanted to visit so as to allow his massive slide collection to grow just that little bit more. As was nearly always the case with Frank, the trip was a total success.
Having known Frank since early 1999 I can honestly say we have lost one of the nicest people and fellow photographers that I've ever had the chance to meet. On a clear and cool Winters morning it was never hard to convince him to get out of bed for a morning of photography at Sydney Airport. However, in Summer it was a totally different story. Frank loved his home suburb Coogee and on those 30+ degree days he'd often be found lazing on the beach relaxing as only Frank could........ generally on a Qantas blanket borrowed from one of their aircraft! In Summer late afternoon was his preferred time to visit the airport, after a hard day on the beach it was easy to relax by the fence and take some photos of the afternoon heavies returning home to Europe and America.
Frank enjoyed Australia and enjoyed exploring the aircraft we had to offer. Travelling from Sydney as far West as Perth and as far North as Cairns and most recently South to Hobart. Together we also toured by car around our home state, New South Wales, looking for the rare and unusual. To have so much time with him is something I'll treasure forever.
Being such an accomplished photographer Frank made many friends around the world. This is why I post this news here, so that his friends and "fans" can remember and reflect on his life and photographic achievments. I know that if you've met him, like me, there is no way you will forget him. People of his character are far too few in this world.
I should take this opportunity to thank Frank for a friendship that will stay with me for a lifetime and for being such a good mate. No words could ever describe how I feel as I write this tribute to my dear friend. Those that have lost close friends will know the pain I feel right now. There are so many times, events and memories I wish to share but if I start with one I won't be able to stop as there is simply so much to say about him!
I would also like to thank my better half Anna. She admired my friendship with Frank and never hesitated to allow me to travel with him while pregnant and later while raising our daughter Charlotte. To you I say thank you. Thank you for giving me that chance to travel while you stayed home, for giving me the chance to spend time with a great friend and thank you for being so strong and loving in the days since Frank's passing. He'd be so proud of you for sacrificing time that should have been spent studying to be by my side........
Finally I would like to thank the administrators and moderators of this site for allowing me to post this most tragic news here. Also, to those that have e-mailed or phoned me already offering their condolences your support and friendship is very much appreciated. To his work colleagues, thank you too - without you I might never have known what had happened.
Let me leave you with a photographic tribute to the late Frank Schaefer - a son, a friend and a damn fine aviation photographer. This tribute has kindly been hosted by Dave Faulkner of http://www.rwy34.com
My thoughts at this time are with his family who travelled so far only to be greeted with an event unimaginable to anyone. Please, take a moment and spare a thought for a family in mourning.
You will always be in our thoughts and you will never ever be forgotten.

Frank's smile in his pictures is refreshing, and it makes sense for him to be so happy, since he had such great friends in his life like yourself, Craig.
Everyone who came to this site knew Frank's name. The man with all the shots, from all the decades, dominating the scene with this powerful presence on everything wbepage you looked at.
A major blow to the aviation community, but he's in a good place now and he will certainly not be forgotten any time soon.

Having met Frank in person 2 years ago, and having traded good ol' Kodachrome slides off and on over the past 3-4 years, this is truly a touching and tragic loss to the aviation community. He was an instantly likeable guy, who took time to enjoy some of life's more simple things - drinking beers with mates, chilling at the beach, and not to mention countless hours at SYD shooting "full-frame" slides
Craig - wonderful tribute - extremely touching, and hard not to shed a tear.
Frank - it was an honour to have met you - I hope the grass is truly greener where you are.
Sincerely,
Rob Rindt

I was shocked and saddened when I heard about Frank's passing. I still can't believe Frank is gone. This comes as a shock to the aviation world.
Of course since Frank and I had a somewhat more similar interest in photography, namely K64, I have always admired his fantastic collection here on a.net.
I have been lucky to have met Frank last summer when he stayed over in our house in Amsterdam. I can only second the good things everyone has to say about him. Frank had an incredible personality and was a real good natured guy with a great sense of humor.
My thoughts are with his family and close friends right now, for whom this must be an incredibly difficult time.

P.S. Craig thank you for putting together that photoalbum

Frank has made an enormous influence in aviation photography and I doubt that there is any aviation photographer who does not know his name.
My condolances to his family and friends and I wish them all the strength to overcome this great loss...

I am still in shock over this. Frank was a legend and one of the nicest guys you could meet. I traded Slides with Frank for a few years and got to meet him in Sydney a few times. Frank was always willing to help out, and always ready to have fun! I have great memories of hanging out with Frank at Coogee Beach and cruising with him in his beloved MG checking out the babes at the beach. I will never forget those times.
This is a big loss to the Aviation community, but most importantly, we have lost a great mate. My thoughts go out to his family.
Frank, wherever you are now, I hope you are having a great time. Thanks for the memories buddy!!!

Shocking to hear of such a loss, and at such a tender age.
