Hello,
I remember that a while ago I saw a website showing some photo positions around London City airport. As I will fly out of LCY on Tuesday, I wanted to use the opportunity to get some nice turboprop photos before my flight goes back to LUX. However I only know the spot at the parkin, south of the runway. Where are the other good places? And has anyone had any truble in LCY lately? I remember a post from late 2002 where a photog was hassled by LCY's PR manager?

Hi Tom,
I was at LCY in March & there were no problems whatsoever. Of course, armed Metropolitan Police are patrolling the airport & its vicinity (also by boat), but they appeared to be friendly blokes. I didn't have much time, so I went to a spot just past the Jet Centre in the west. The spot is close to the water & as far as I know it's public. I think there are quite a few other spots available—I think of the embankment just north of the site & the two street bridges west & east of the airport.
In this photo you can see my spot in the lower left corner. There is some ugly container in the way but you can take some good action shots with a long lens.

A good place to take pics at LCY is on the north side across the docks. You can get their by Dock Land Railroad. Get off once you pass The hotels and The Royal Rowing Club and chinees restaurant I think it is call Hi-Ban or something similar. THe shots there are descent. Their is currently a really nice park there. Not sure how you can get to the terminal quickly and cheaply.

Hello,
Thanks for your answers.
@ Thomas: Nice shots... which focal length did you use for them? I am also a bit confused where those parked cars on the Do328 photos are standing... are they to the East of the airport parking lot and one just can not see the dock between the runway and the cars?

Hi Tom,
Focal length was 400mm multiplied by 1.6x digital factor. The image file was also cropped by 1/3.
The 2 cars must park west of the whole complex. I'm not sure if the spot is publicly accessible. In this photo they would stand a bit left to the lower left corner.

Thanks Thomas,
400mm, that explains it
I was forever looking at your photo and wondering where these cars could be! They look so close...
I have a 70-200 with 1.4 converter, i.e. 280mm x crop factor 1.6.
So you were basically at the beginning of the western road bridge if I see it right on the photos? Should also be a good place for arriving traffic if Rwy 28 is in operation.

Hi again
So you were basically at the beginning of the western road bridge
Not quite on the bridge, but very close. If you walk from the terminal westbound you'll see eventually a roundabout (I believe). From there don't go onto the bridge but take the footpath just to the right. However, why not trying to shoot from the bridge ... you probably have a better overview from there. It should be possible to take photos of taxiing aircraft regardless of runway usage. LCY is so small that there is no parallel taxiway so all aircraft have to use the runway for it.
