Are you able to get to the terrace at AMS once you are in the Gate area? I'll be flying into AMS from DTW early on July 26 then leaving out later in the morning and will have some spotting time, but wondered how I can get to the terrace.

to get to the terrace from the secure area you have to pass passport check, pass the baggage claim area, pass customs, and go all the way up.
Then you need to pass security and passport check again when you want to get back to the gate area.
If you have a boarding pass this is no problem, just takes some time (depending on how busy it is).

Actually since I am arriving from the U.S. I'll have to go through passport and customs before I transfer to my connecting flight within Europe. So once I'm through (really out) are there signs to the Terrace.
Thanks for the help.
Also I've asked around before, but when I return to AMS on Aug. 9th I'll be spending the night in around the airport, the city is Badhoevedorp, and I was wondering if there are any bike rental places for me to rent a bike for the day to go around the airport? If not I'll take the bus, but I'd like to head out to the far runway as I've seen some great pictures from there.
