HI !
I need your help please... I want to buy a new digital camera.
I don't have the budget to buy a SLR camera like the digital rebel, is why I want to buy point and shoot camera.
after many week of search I finally found 4 models but two of theses are out.
the Fuji S5000 (bad compression) and the Z1 or Z2 (ugly look)
I'm now hesitate between the easy use Kodak DX-6490 (4M pixel 10X zoom) or the new Canon S1 IS with the image stabilize but only 3.2M pixel.
I hesitate because the Kodak have 4M pixel and the Canon only 3M pixel?
after reading many forum and news, I can't really know witch is better for me and for the aviation picture I will make.
any user comment is welcome. I try to find something in the search menu but not fund any.

I spent time evaluating the S5000, Z1 & DX6490. I came to the same conclusion with regard to the S5000, and eventually, after careful thought chose the DX6490. I have a friend who has the Z1 and he is very happy with it (although he does not take aviation photos). I'm afraid I can't give you any pointers towards the Canon S1.
I have uploaded a small number of photos to the photo pages which have been taken with the DX6490. Here's my favourite at my home airport (Which was uploaded without any editing / enhancement).
I will say that I have bought the camera as a "short-term" thing and (subject to budget) will be looking at an SLR. But I can honestly say I have been more than happy with it in all aspects.

Ahh, now isn't that ironic! The only pointers I can give are towards the S1 IS, which I own right now.
Although it's only 3.2mp, the image stabilitation will make up for it. I haven't had a blurry shot yet! 10x optical, can't beat it. Some of the other things I particularly like are that the LCD can be put in nearly any position. It takes normal AA batteries, but I'd suggest rechargable NiMH's. You use compact flashcards. I have a 256mb card, which runs at around $50 USD. At the highest quality and resolution settings I can fit 153 photos. The main reason I started to look at the S1 was because it looks sturdy... not anything like those rectanglular cameras with 3x optical.
Being that I haven't uploaded any of my shots here yet, here are a few shots I took this week (link is to the original, the actual photo below is just 640*). I had to resave a few originals to get them under 1 MB.
The only problem that I have with the S1 is that sometimes when you shoot images in backlit conditions, you get purple/blue fringing around the edges as below. Yes, that is a raccoon. Long story...
This is my first digital camera, and I'm very happy with it. I'll try to start spotting more. If you have any more questions feel free to post them here or email me at pianoman110@aol.com . If I were to make the choice again, I would definately take the S1 IS.

There is a fine line between a picture and a photo. The latter seems to be disappearing.

Thank you NEXtime and Christ
Nice picture Christ, but the only plane picture is not your best... The compression is so high... Did you use the digital zoom of the camera?
I would like to see more plane picture from the S1.
but all the others pictures are nice and clean. Thank to share with us.

YULtoPEI,
Glad you brought that up. That one plane photo was over 1 MB (servers maximum limit) so in order to keep the original resolution I had to save in Photoshop with much more JPEG compression than I had hoped.
If you want the actual original straight from the camera, just send me an email (email address is in my first post). And, one more thing... my name isn't Christ.

I bought the DX6490 a few weeks ago. I've been out shooting only once. It's my first digicam and I'm not a good photographer (yet) I really can't tell anything relevant about it, I'm still learning. Only that I love the big display and the looks of the cam more than the Canon S1. And it feels good in my hands (I only can speak for myself)
All I can do is show you some images of that one particular day I was out shooting.
All pictures are taken with the highest resolution.
Some darker pictures are taken with the sports setting as I thought an a/c is also a moving object. I tried different settings the whole day and I had troubles with centering the object at first but it was getting better later on.
I btw still have to process the pics.
Taken with max. optical zoom (10X):

Please take note that the host www.photobucket.nl resizes pics larger than 250k and can make look the result much worse than they really are.

happy to see some aviation picture with the DX-6490, couple are really nice, but needing some post-processing.
I have couples more questions???
do you use a stand, tripod for shooting? With the 10X?
how far you are of the plane the most time?
what about the battery?

YULtoPEI,
Can you show us the results?
I'll remove the pics I posted from photobucket as this takes ages to load.

Sander

(all 4 are rejected in A.net... , but i understand)
I would like to said that I took really good no-aviation picture, like flowers and landscape that look really nice.
