They used to be a Regional Airline for UA and DL, and they decided to break away from them and form their own airline. So if you go through the registration on here they will come up with Atlantic Coast Airlines aircraft in United Express colors.

The story with I-Air is that all CRJs were used for UAX flights operated by ACA. Delta Connection flights were operated by other wing of ACA called ACA Jets.
ACA Jets operated only FD-328Jet aircrafts.
After the contract broke with United, ACA created its own new LCC airline "Independence Air". When I-Air placed an order for A319/320 it violated contract with Delta Connection which prohibit a carrier flying as a Delta feeder airline to have aircrafts with some number of seats (I think 75 is the maximum number of seats). So they said "screw all of you". And thats how Independence Air became independent airline
