All going well, at December 24th I'll be flying to Vancouver.
Could someone tell me what approach and runways do they normally use for landing and take-off ) in wintertime)? I'll be arriving from Frankfurt and later going to Winnipeg. I'll be arriving from YYZ and some days later leave again towards FRA.
I just wanted to know just to get a good seat to view the city on approach.
By the way, where is the best place to shoot at YVR?

I'm looking forward to this trip. Any idea of what runways they use in wintertime to T/O and land? How is the weather usually on the beginning of January? And how could I arrive to the Avis parking lot from the airport?

Whether or not you'll see Vancouver on approach to landing depends on the weather !
1. Will it be clear ? Definitely 'iffy' in December.
2. Which way is the wind blowing ? Predominantly westerly in the winter, so I'd suggest a seat on the right side (eg H/J/K) of the plane. If you happen to land into an easterly though, you'll see nothing but sea.

Here is a map of YVR with all the spots listed as red X's. If you want backlit-against-the-sun photography, then by all means, use Bruce's guide.
However, if you want to get shots with a background like most people, spot X(1) is your best bet - we call it the AVIS lot. In the winter, it's about the only do-able spot anyway, apart from X(2) which is Templeton for 26R approach shots only.
Those are from AVIS... North America's finest spot.
But by all means... go to the north spot if you like this stuff more...

I am looking forward to a trip back to YVR some time in the near future.... unforturnatly with the nature of my business I am only avialable in the winter time but if you get a clear day with the snow on the mountains....what an amazing back drop, I have a few pics in the database but none as good as Rob, Rich, and the other YVR crew!
How about Kaz's pics from the Fairmont hotel in the airport.... WOW thats worth the price of a room!!
