Does anyone know if there are any good shooting locations within the terminal area at El Paso or do I need a car? I'm only there for a 1 day layover.

I also have 1 1/2 days in Denver with a car. I've not visited before so could our locals please advise on the current places to go

cheers

Kev

At Denver there are only 3 locations at the current moment.

1. Conoco Station
2. Runway 35L
3. Runways 16L/R

Conoco station
At the far west end of the rental car road there is a service station named Conoco. You can park in the dirt lot next to the station and walk along the road back toward the terminals. You will get arrivals on runway 7 (only if there is a decent east wind). Most likely there will be departures from runway 25. By the time the departing aircraft get to your location they'll probably be too high. Sun is best November through February.

Runway 35L
From the terminal, go west on Pena Blvd. The first exit is Jackson Gap Road. Go south (left from Pena Blvd as you are going toward Denver) on Jackson Gap Road and follow the signs to the Mt. Elbert parking area (this lot is only used during peak travel times of Thanksgiving and Christmas). There are 3 driveways that enter the lot. Pick one of them and park in it. Denver Police Department prefers the photographers to remain outside their vehicles so that way they know immediately what they are doing. Otherwise you may get a visit and may be asked to leave. Sun is best in the late afternoon all year round. If runway 35L is not in use, forget about this spot.

Runways 16L/R
From Pena Blvd, go north on Tower Road (left turn from Pena Blvd as you are going toward Denver). Turn right (east) on 96th Ave and follow this road for several miles. THe road will curve to the north and back to the east which at that point it becomes 114th Street (I think). You will see the approaches for runway 16L and 16R. You will also notice the signs that forbid parking near the approaches. This is strictly enforced? Park up on the "hill" and walk down to the approach area. Sun is best in the early morning or late afternoon all year round.

Let us know what dates you will be visiting and we'll see who will be around.

HTH
Mark

Corrections to that last paragraph:

Runways 16L/R
From Pena Blvd, go north on Tower Road (right turn from Pena Blvd as you are going toward Denver). Turn right (east) on 96th Ave and follow this road for several miles. The road will curve to the north and back to the east which at that point it becomes 114th Street (I think). You will see the approaches for runway 16L and 16R. You will also notice the signs that forbid parking near the approaches. This is strictly enforced! Park up on the "hill" and walk down to the approach area. We don't have the Conoco station posted yet, but I'm working on it...

There is a ground level waiting area (before security) in the ELP terminal. As long as the adjacent gate is not occupied, some shots are possible through the glass but it's far from ideal. Some spots beside the terminal, but I would certainly expect to be visited by security if hanging around there.

The perimeter is walkable but you are liable to attract attention from both the authorities and maybe some local characters. Not recommended, I'd definitely hire a car.

Eric (DLKAPA), Jason (Nosedive), and I all have done some work on SpotDenver, we finally have the site up, and I think that it should give you and anyone else hoping to go spotting at DEN some very good information. All decent photography locations are now listed. http://spotdenver.tripod.com/index.html

Just had a look at the site. The maps make things a lot easier to visualise so thanks for putting those up. Hopefully I'll meet a few locals while I'm in town.
