G'day
Just wonderin what everyones generic battery experiences have been like.
I have used nothing but original Canon so far but i am looking at picking up several generics for the new 20D.
I know there are several 7.2v and 7.4v batts available but what are they like?
How do they compare for life against an original?
Does your battery indicator play up showing lower than normal charge and most importantly how does your camera go?
Thanks
Darren

hi darren
i purchased a generic from ebay earlier this year before i came to Sydney, still run's like a swiss watch, i got a powermart 7.4V, only really visual difference is the colour is silver and it's not a canon.
for $35 you can't go wrong, she's been going good for 9 months now and it saved me well over $120.

does me the whole day, i was using it on sunday last week, wednesday and friday and i hadn't recharged it at all, rattled off close to 450 shot's and she still got life in her. so i'd say give it a go. so far i've used it in the last week for about 5 hrs shooting, still registers as full power.
how's the 20D? as good as you expected?!?! seem's you and i may well be the only people in Oz shooting planes with it!

When it comes to generic batteries I use two. One is a silver hahnel battery and it's performance is slightly better than the canon battery and I also have a dark grey/black coloured generic battery. This one still gives me a good number of shots, but does not last as long.
I have also found that using canon lenses does not drain batteries as quickly as other brand lenses do. I also have a Sigma 170-500 and that really drains the batteries and I don't use it much because I don't know if it is damaging the battery by drawing too much.

I've had nothing but good experiences from generic batteries. I bought a couple from the net here in the UK at a fraction of the price of the Canon ones. They last just as long, actually i think they are rated slightly higher than the original BP511. Definately better vfm over the Canon ones.

I purchased a generic battery for the D30 from Wal-Mart and never had a problem, in fact i think it lasts longer than the Canon!
Only complaint is that i dont like the way it fits on the charger. the Canon battery would kind of snap into place but this one seems a tad loose but it does charge anyway.

HI Monty
Went out today.
Wow!!
Blows the 10D out of the water for out of camera sharpness compared to my old body.
AF is way way way more accurate vs a moving target.
I am wrapped.
Got a couple of cool shots of CX cargo and the A340-600 plus a few motion shots from somewhere new at Syd.
They will be up soon.

Darren,
I have a couple of the generic batteries, and have not even noticed the difference. With the battery pack attached to the camera, I can shoot all day without needing to recharge. Even using the camera at night and having to focus and refocus all the time it rarely even reads half full after a full day of shooting.

With Darren joining the list, it makes three of us, that I know of, with plenty more people wanting to purchase one.

re: 20D autofocus blows the 10D out of the water for camera sharpness.....
Is autofocus a function of the lens or the body? I always thought it was the lens....

Hi Bruce
The AF in Canon gear is driven to position by the info presented from the onboard AF system in the body.
The AF on the 20D is 9 point instead of 7 and considerably more accurate than that of the 10D.
For similar resons the 45point AF of the 1DMk2 is faster than the 20D.
