Hi Guys,
In two weeks I will take flight from IAD going to RZE. One of the stops is FRA. I will have little over 5 hours to kill there. What are the best places for photography in FRA.

The visitors terrace at T1 is very good for viewing but it is not the best place if you want to take photos. The light will only be good in the late afternoon.
However, with only five hours stop over time you will probaly have no other choice.
You may try to walk from T2 to the rwy25 approach which is a 30min walk along the airport fence on a paved walkway. Light is good from the early morning until the afternoon.

The terrace is still open and it will stay open at least until summer next year according to airport authorities officials. It is yet not finally decided if they will close the terrace or not.
I personally can not believe that they will also close the terrace on T1 (terrace on T2 is still closed). The terrace is a good public relation thing especially considering the discussion about the new runway.

Hi Guys,
I sent email to FRA Airport customer service and to Bundesgrenzschutzamt Flughafen Frankfurt/Main Sachgebiet Grenzpolizei (border police? )
I've asked them if I will have enough time to go thru customs and back. Both of them told me that 5 hours is more than enough to visit the deck. Both responded within minutes. I have to say that they have really good customer service at FRA.
"If you are an US-Citizen and holding an US-passport, it will be no problem to leave the transit area in order to visit the Visitors terrace in Terminal 1, Hall A"
"Five hours overlay time are more than enough time to enjoy a stay at our visitor's terrace.
Our visitor's terrace, located in the public part of terminal 1, is open March to October 08:00 am to 08:30 pm, last admission 30 minutes before closing."
My other question is: If the sun on the deck is good only afternoon, is there any place inside the terminal where I can shoot from? I will be there from 10:30 am until 4pm.

best place for that time is near runway 25 approach or 07, it's totally backlit from the deck between those times you mentioned, 18 is good for the late afternoon too. though i think you'd want 18 later than your there.
you can walk to 25 if it's in use from terminal 2, just walk out and go right and follow the path around.
07 and 18 a car is a good choice.

The terrace is located towards the north of the airport.
(in the middle / left on the picture where all those LH heavies are parked)
You will be facing the sun all day if you are trying to shoot RWY 25R and L arrivals. For the west facing gates (B20-28) you should be fine in the morning hours.

Keep in mind that at this time of the year, it might well be a cloudy or overcast day (hopefully not raining though), then it doesn't really matter if you're facing the sun or not...
The walk to 25 might be too long when you have 5 hours and are not familiar with the surroundings. From inside terminal, you'd have pretty much the same view than from the deck, so I think the deck is always the better option. The only really cool place is inside the new part of concourse A, sooo close to the taxiway.
Have a great time in FRA!

I've just returned from FRA. The day was OVC all the time. I was there from 12 a.m. to 8 p.m. It wasn't that cold 15 degrees Celcius and it rained a bit. But still managed to catch a few birds.
