I don't think anyone has got both the D70 & the 300D and so you might struggle to get a definitive answer as to which is the best camera. The closest you might get is JeffM as he has both the D100 and the 10D.
Personally I don't think one is necessarily 'Better' than the other. They're both great cameras and take excellent images.... it's more a question of personal choice really.
Have a look through the DB and find simialr images taken with a D70 & a 300D and see which output you prefer.
In my case I had a Nikon F-401s but at the time could not afford anything other than a Canon EOS D30. I therefore sold off the Nikon kit and bought into the Canon system and will be sticking with it. If you already have lenses of one type then you may consider sticking with that system.
Hope that helps,
Cheers!

The cameras are probably pretty close in comparison, what's more important is the future. What will you do when the D70 or 300D is too old and needs replacing? By then you'll most likely have a bunch of accessories and lenses so you'll want to buy a new camera of the same make. That should be the reason for chosing one make or the other, not the small differences between the two you are looking at.

i use the d70 with the 18-70 and the 70-300. i'm complately satisfied with the kit, only saving cash to buy the 80-400 VR. basically, they're the same camera. if you want the canon, go canon. if you want the nikon, get the nikon. you'll know what i'm supporting.

The D70 is my personal camera of choice if I were to be spending this amount of money. The D70 is a bloody good camera and i hear alot of good things about it.
You hear of a few problems with canons but not many with Nikons...

Hi,
I have used Canon 300D for a few monthes and then I changed to Nikon D70 which was the camera I wanted but there wasn't stock at the moment and I was going for holidays.
Since 25th June I'm using Nikon D70 with the standard 70-300 G Lense (the cheapest ones). Since mid Octobre I changed the lenses to a 80-400 ED VR Nikon Lenses...much much better. Only 900€ in Hong Kong

Already said...think more about lenses and in which camera do you feel more comfortable.
1. If you intend to buy pro lenses go for canon..no doubt
2. If you are very comfortable with 'no so good' lenses try, handle the body and.choose CANON!! (that's a joke...sorry nikonians)

As I understand it, the 300D does not have a metal lens mount, while the D70 does (that's important to me). Also, the D70 is new compared to the digital Rebel. I'm actually saving up for the D70 right now...hope to get it within the next few months. Altho I already have lenses, I plan to get it with the 70-300mm lens...which I'll keep on it unless I absolutely need to get closer or rent a bigger VR lens.
Viva la Nikon!

I own a Nikon D70 and I like it very much.
I have been a Canon user before. I've had the EOS 500 and EOS 1n.
I had planned to buy a Canon EOS 300d but at the store I felt on both the 300d and the D70. Why did I chose the D70? - Because it felt much nicer in my hands and had a few other specs that I liked.
I would say...Go to the store and try them both out (hold) to get a feeling of the cameras.

Been to Dixons an hour ago. The idiots did not even have batteries for the D70 and the 300D. I am not going to buy either till I can test them for myself so have passed, for now.

Quality wise i don't think there is much difference between them and it comes down to personal preferences.
I played around with the D70 a few times and the only thing i don't like, which counts for all Nikon DSLR's is the fact that it seems to have more then a zillion knobs, buttons, levers, staircases, elevators and what ever.
It makes me feel like an octopus and always reminds me to the days of the ZX-Spectrum computer where you needed 12 fingers, 2 noses and 4 ears to get something like "@" on your screen.
Then again, i got used to it aswell.
The 300D downside to me would be that it lacks a servo mode but i don't know whether the D70 has it.
Please forget about Dixons and go to a proper camera shop, you can get your 300D for around 750(kit) and for 1099 you can get your hands on a real 10D.

Sorry guys, someone told me once that the digital Rebel didn't have a metal lens mount...maybe they were talking about the film version? That seems to be the first thing that pops up if someone doesn't like a brand or camera, whether or not it's true. Someone tried to tell me Nikon N75's didn't have a metal lens mount and to go for a different camera...but the N75 does. Anyway, because I'm a Nikonian, D70 is the choice for me...and I'm saving up for it.

I am guessing the problems you hear about are in proportion to the amount of Canon's there are out there vs. Nikon's? In other words, you probably "hear" of more Canon problems because there is more Canon's than Nikon's out there.
I think this is true in at least the AV Photo circle.

As a long time Nikonian, I have invested in the D70. I think it's a pretty good camera when married to a good lens.
As to the comments about all the buttons, if you're shooting in RAW mode, then most of the options don't apply. I suspect most DSLR users only use 10-15% of the available 'features' of their camera (regardless of N vs C).
