Ok guys,
I am putting together my list of things to buy with my Canon 20D. I have somewhat shyed away from the Canon 17-85mm EF-S IS in favor of the Canon 28-135mm F/ 3.5- 5.6 IS.
I currently have the Canon 18-55mm EF-S, Canon 70-200 F/4 L and the Canon 100-400mm L IS.
The 28-135mm fits in nicely with what I currently have and what I will be getting by January/February 06 ( Canon 10-22mm EF-S and the Canon 500mm F/4 L IS) but, I would like to know what current/past users think of this lens as far as speed and sharpness etc..

I see the Canon 28-105mm is the way to go?
What about the Sigma glass around this range? I havent seen many reviews on those lenses.

Chad, as you'll see, Colin Work rates the 24-85. Must admit that I'm thinking of ditching the 28-135, and I might look at the 24-85 now I have the 70-200, as the stretch to 105 or 135 is no longer so important. No idea on Sigma as I haven't tried any of their lenses - someone else will have to comment on those.

I should point out that I have nothing against the 28-105 ... simply that the 24-85 fit better into my lens range (4mm on the wide end being more useful than 20 at the long end).
Actually the 24-85 is a bit of a curiosity - it started life as the flagship lens for Canon's abortive APS film SLR, but was then re-engineered for use on standard SLRs. As such it suffered a little from edge softness in the context of full frame 35mm. However, with the advent of cropped DSLR sensors, it has been given a new lease of life, as its really being used as originally intended.
Of course, if a full frame DSLR is being considered, this is perhaps not the best choice of lens.
