Bad Quality. Kind Of Esoteric No?

I'm just curious what exactly about his image gave it the bad quality reject. I though it was one of the better ones of the batch. But alas, the screeners are wiser than me ( I mean that sincerely not sarcastically). Again, not arguing just trying to learn. Thanks for the input.

AIRLINERS.NET CREW
PHOTO SCREENER

looks soft and dark to me.

What exactly does Esoteric mean, with regards to this post or your rejected image? I looked it up online and here is what I found:

es·o·ter·ic ( P ) Pronunciation Key (s-trk)
adj.

Intended for or understood by only a particular group: an esoteric cult. See Synonyms at mysterious.
Of or relating to that which is known by a restricted number of people.

Confined to a small group: esoteric interests.
Not publicly disclosed; confidential.

If you want to make the picture better you should start by bring out some of the shadow detail

Clickhappy, you picked a perfect definition for esoteric. "or understood by only a particular group." ----the term Bad Quality being the object and the group being those who understand what is wrong with the pic. A synonym is mysterious. I was just trying to spice up the title instead of being the 1000000th Badquality help post..

And if you would care to explain the best shadow detail bringing out techiniques...i'm all ears.

Your contrast is enormous, try and tone it down a bit. I cannot believe that this is how the picture looked when it came out of the camera.

Result of auto levels? Adjust them manually (the midlle bar) and the shadow details will be revealed.

Thanks. A combo of the middle slider and the contrast tone down worked wonders on the shadow detail.

Or if you have PS CS there's always the "magic" highlight/shadow tool.

It would be nice if there was an FAQ section on photo editing techniques, I'm sure the same questions get asked many times. I have a collection of rejection notices, & while I usually see what the screeners mean after they point it out, I don't understand how to fix it.

Can you hear me now?
