I'm planning on buying a digital camera. I have my search narrowed down to 2 models, Fujifilm E550 (6.3 MP, 4x optical zoom) and Fujifilm S5100 (4 MP, 10x optical zoom) to replace my 35mm. I've chosen these particular models due to local availability and price. Which of these cameras would be a better investment for spotting? I have Photo Shop already. I mainly will spot at PHX, MCO, and TPA if that makes any impact. I've talked to camera people already but I really haven't gotten input from spotters, so anything you can add to help me make this decision will be welcome. Thanks in advance!

Have you considered buying a digital SLR camera? Such as the Canon 300D "Digital Rebel" It's pretty much the standard in "pro-sumer" digital cameras.
If you are not looking to pay upwards of $1000, then your choices would be adequate. The 6MP 4x Zoom would grant you a larger picture size, at higher quality. In other words, if you plan to enlarge your pictures, you can do so to a greater extant without a lose of quality. However your tradeoff is you have less zoom. A 4MP 10x Zoom would get you some decently close pictures, but at a lesser quality. Also, with only 4mp you would be greatly limited as to how large you would be able to print your pictures without a lose of quality.
If you plan to take pictures for a hobby, and don't intend on selling, I would suggest you go with the latter choice, that being the 4mp 10x zoom.

Right now I'm not willing to invest in SLR. This camera will be used as a hobby, I don't plan on selling. I'm just looking for a good spotting camera for personal use.
Unfortunately I couldn't find the review for the S5100 on the website. Also, I'm having trouble registering on dpreview.com to ask on the forum. Would they have been knowledgeable enough to help in the field of aviation photography though? I figured I would get more help here than there.

Monorail, if you are interested in photography as a hobby, between your two choices, I would personally go with the 4mp 10x zoom.
For around 800-900 USD, you can purchase the acclaimed Nikon Coolpix 8800 http://www.dpreview.com/articles/nikoncp8800/ It has a new 10x optical zoom lens (35 - 350 mm equiv.; F2.6 - F4.9). It is not SLR. The price may be a bit hefty for you, but in the long run I assure you this camera will pay for itself. You will get exceptional quality (at 8mp's) and its 35-350mm 10x zoom will provide you with near-limitless photographic opportunities!
