Hello all,
I was searching through some old threads and was debating on going to GRR or DTW for spotting. Grand Rapids seems to be the winner due to a friendly spotting (observation) area. I am trying to find out what the best times are for taking pictures from the observation area? When is the sun behind you? From what you all know is it still fine to shoot pics from there?
Sorry for starting a new topic, but this topic is archived so i couldn't add to that thread. thanks for all your help!

I was in GRR back in the spring. At the time, I did not know about the ob. area. I was taking pictures from near the air cargo area. I did not have a problem. Judging by the runway setup, rwy 8R/26L would offer good views, as in the morning, the sun would be behind and to your right, and in the afternoon, it would be, behind, and to your left.

GRR has some great spotting. You can spot from the observation area inside on the second floor of the main terminal, you can also spot hassle free from the main level of the terminal. But best of all is the viewing park accross the runway from the terminal, where most of the pictures in the database where taken from. GRR is a pretty good airport, but I guarantee your not going to get anything like you would at DTW, but you'll have much better spots to spot from. So it's kind of a toss up, better location, or more activity?
Here's the plugfest! .... (I never miss the opportunity!)

I've never been to GRR, but I've heard a lot of good things about that airport. DTW of course has a TON of traffic (lots of heavies too), but I never could seem to find the really sweet spots for photography. The perimeter roads all have "NO STOPPING, STANDING OR PARKING" signs every 10 feet, and there are cops EVERYWHERE. They never did mess with me, but then I kept moving too!
Vinings Road has a couple of nice spots on it, but you'll have to be quick about it. Here are some shots I got last April:
If you're interested in a brief road trip, I might also suggest FWA. We've got lots of interesting traffic, and I can probably show you around a bit as well. Charlie has been out here before, he loved it. FWA is VERY spotter-friendly.
