Well i have taken the plunge and ordered my equipment .... I shall soon be the proud owner of a new 20D.
Now i have also purchased 4 lenses + extender which are all Canon L (70-200 f2.8 is usm , 17-40 f4 , 135 f2 , 300 f4 , 1.4 II extender).
And before anyone asks.... No im not very rich but just had to work flippin hard to get to this point
Can anyone confirm tips (what to avoid) etc etc for keeping the equipment in tip top condition. How to store items , and what not to do while using the equipment. The last thing i want to do it screw up something only days after recieving it !!!!!
Cheers

Well given your budget constraints, I'd at least try to get to a Wal-Mart or Meijers and pick up some sort of backpack or duffle bag to keep your equipment in. Perhaps you can use the original boxes and foam for padding?
Seriously - congrats on such a purchase. If the wife would take a trip for a week or two my list might just match yours! But then, when she returned...
ah hell it's not worth it. I'm happy with my 300D and 75-300 IS!

I dont know about the other lenses, but I know that the 17-40 comes with a fantastic leather-like bag which will hold the lens beautifully. I imagine the 70-200 and 300 f4 also coming with a similar bag. My 100-400 certainly did.

Wietse is correct the 70-200 and 300 also come with there own bags.
Seriously if you intend on getting more glass than that the mini trekker is not going to be big enough.
I have a 10-22,17-40,24-70,70-200 and 100-400 and have no room for my flash.
The full trekker or anoth full size bag may be in order if you are getting more glass in the future.
All the best with the 20D its an awesome piece of kit.

Hi guy sorry for the late reply but Iv'e been to a Hockey game (lost 7-3)
Anyway. Thanks for the info on the 70-200 & 300 comming with their own cases. Thats good news. I will keep the 17-40 on the camera. That only leaves the 135 !!! Im sure as its a L lens it will come with something.
I will go for a Lowepro bag just not sure which one to pick just yet as most of the time i will either have my "Ice Hockey lenses" or my "aviation lenses". Never both !!!!
Thanks for the help

One further question.....
Does the minitrekker AW have room for a 300 mm ???? Is there a smaller Lowepro bag that will fit the 300 mm.... Due to a lack of planning on my part i did not allow over £100.00 for the bag.
After shelling out all that cash and the risk to my health if i say to the wife "i need another hundred for the bag" whats the smallest loweprobag that can fit a 300 mm in . From looking at their site the "Classic" will only hold a 200 mm.

Simon,
Be very careful with your kit in Miami (other thread!). If you go there when it is humid, the camera and lenses will all fog up as you take it from an air-conditioned hotel room or air conditioned car to outside. When you go outside, but ALL your gear in a SEALED plastic bag (so no air can get in) and when you get outside wait for a while (maybe 15-30 minutes) until the gear in thge bag has warmed up to the outside temperature before opening the bag. This will avoid the fogging. Fogging of lenses can occur inside the lenses and will leave marks impossible to remove, and may also leave condensation marks on a digi-SLR sensor too - it will also do no good to sensitive electronic components inside the camera.

Thanks for the heads up Andy.... I was going to take the kit to MIA so you have saved me alot of possible problems. I will now put each piece of equipment in a sealed plastic bag....

As soon as those Hama filters come, ditch them!
They are crap! Might be cheap but they flare like you wouldnt belive and just generally dont help. I'd reccomend going for a different brand. Hoya make good filters.
I used a Hama filter on my 70-200 and got nothing but lenseflare when shooting into the sky. I now use Hoya!

Hi Simon,
Nice equipment order, I bet you can't wait for that little lot to arrive. Just need some good weather over Hounslow.
My normal bag is a Lowepro Classic Photo Trekker
Ice Hockey bag is a Lowepro Toploader 75
When I don't need everything, but need a back pack I have a Hama Trackpack cheap as chips bag bought from 7dayshop for £17, great value.

Can i ask how many Lenses will fit in the Hama Trackpack.... Also does it hold a 300 mm
It will hold a 300mm, but trying to get the 70-200 in too is a real squeeze. Not ideal at all.
I use it for traveling when I don't want to have all the equipment. The other trouble comes with flying. The Photo Trekker Classic will all my kit inside is to heavy for hand baggage on many airlines. I'm a little paranoid that an airline would want me to put the bag in the hold. No way!
I can get in the EOS body, 70-200 or 300, along with extenders and 17-40.

Thanks Martin for the photo's
I have just pruchased the same as you "Lowepro trekker Classic" for £108.00
Can anyone confirm one other thing that im just a bit worried about.
When changing lenses are there any do's and don'ts. Should the camera be turned off etc etc. I also seem to remember someone saying on this board about a big error you can do when putting together a 1.4 extender + Lens. Which if done incorrectly would cause big problems......
Cheers

Simon,
Try to wait about 30sec after turning your camera off before you remove the lens. This should help to reduce the static charge that attracts dust inside the camera. Remember you will get dust inside and you will have to clean the sensor at some point - be prepared with the correct tools and cleaners.
