Hi everyone. My friend 727Lover and I were thinking of taking a day trip to DC on either Feb 12 or 19, which ever is more convienient for the photographers of DC. The problem is, we need someone to show us around. We'd be flying into IAD. I'd like to shoot IAD's international traffic but 727Lover wants to shoot DCA cause of Gravely Point. What do you all recommend? How is IAD for shooting? Would anyone be available either weekend for the whole day? We'd arrive at 8am and takeoff for Florida at 9pm. Hope someone can help!

It depends on winds. Gravelly Point is good if winds are from the South, and IAD is good if winds are from the North. To resolve your problem pick your location depending on winds.
I don't know that far in advance what I will do on those weekends.

Yeah, 727Lover and I had a long discussion about winds and DC airports last night. Talk with you later!

So can anyone please be kind enough to show a fellow photographer around DC either weekend? I really wanna try out IAD or DCA depending on the winds. I wanna book the flights before they go up in price. They're currently at $116 roundtrip. Thanks!

Justin, if its a weekend, I should be around in DC....should cover you in transportation and such....I live only 3 miles from DCA so it's not a problem....unless if Rafal wants to drive 45 minutes to DCA, that's fine with me. lol.
If you like to shoot aircraft with just the sky, then you'll like Dulles. I get bored shooting at Dulles now but I still like the intl traffic they get but the spotting location sucks....but for $8, I could get into the Smithsonian Museum as a military discount from MWR instead of $12 a day. DCA is alright but traffic is getting boring and BWI's location is nice if the winds are to the north.

Hey Kevin! That'd be awesome man. Ozell and I will show you and everyone else around TPA and you can show us around ur home airports. Heres the plan:
- Fly up on IndyAir at 8am Saturday the 12th to IAD.
- Ozell will be renting a car so no need to pick us up at IAD
- Spend all day Sat. shooting
- I'm spending Sat night at the Days Inn by Arlington National Cemetary while Ozell plans on maybe just sleeping in his car.
- Spend Sunday all day shooting and maybe a visit or two to a couple of our nation's proud monuments as I have never been to DC b4.
- Head home Sunday night on IndyAir. Leave at 9:10pm for MCO for me and 9:05 for TPA for Ozell.

That weekend would be the best for me. I suggest if you want to go to downtown DC, take the subway as it is easy to get lost there. I'm not familar with DC and I've been living there since 1993. As for the Days Inn, is it the one on Arlington Blvd off of Route 50 and Pershing? I kinda know where it's at and my dad lives like 5 minutes away from there. I don't know my plans for that weekend yet, but I should be at DCA that weekend. I'm just not sure if I'll leave Friday night after work or saturday morning.

hey are you guys in IAD still getting the Ethiopian 767s in old colors? I'd love to go there sometime to get that baby and BMI's A330..
That in itself should make IAD a better bet, traffic at DCA is probably the same domestics MCO or TPA get. Thing is, at this time of the year 1. It's probably cold as hell, make that like the north pole.. and 2. the weather might not be so great..

If someone's willing to drive us around for the weekend, I'll forget about renting a car. I wanna get to Gravelly Point again......I LOVE THAT PLACE!!!!!!!

For the weekend? You better rent a car Ozell. Who's gonna be willing enough to pick us up from IAD, drive us to DCA, hang with us all day, take us to the hotel, pick us sp the next day, hang with us again all day, drive us back to IAD? Probably NOBODY! You better rent a car.

FYI, Rafal might be able to pick you guys up if you don't rent a car and I'm not sure what time I can make it on saturday becuase I have a wierd work schedule from 2pm til 10pm so I sleep during the day on the weekdays....depends how tired I am on Saturday morning from the 3 1/2 hour drive late Friday night, I might be able to meet you guys in the morning, but not 100%. Definatly when you guys are at DCA, I'll be able to meet ou guys at the park or at BWI.

Sorry, the date is already booked. Feb 12 arrive at 8:00am, leave Feb 13 depart at 9:00pm.
Interestingly, we are coming from 2 cities, but our flights arrive and depart at nearly identicle times. Where do Indy's A319 park at IAD?

Indy's A319's park at two gates at the much nicer concourse B. Concourse A is still nice for a regional airline operation though.

I could definitely be wrong, but I dont see what's the point of paying for airfare, hotel, and car rental to visit an airport far away to shoot the same exact subjects you can get at your home airport..

Thanks Miami! LOL. I tell Ozell the same thing about DCA. He tells me its the spots to shoot from that makes it worth it. I really wanna try IAD if the winds are right because I can't get AF, LF, BMI, United 747s, United 777s, etc etc, at MCO or TPA.
Oh well. lol

Miamix707:
First off, if the weather gods had been kind, we would have gone to MIA for the slide show.
Let me give you a little history. From 92-95, I visited DCA frequently, but I didn't have an SLR back then. All my landing shots were blurry. So then in 1997 with my new SLR, I visited the entire northeast, but the day I set aside for DCA, they were landing from the opposite direction. Then in 2001, a 4-day trip to the region.
Day 1/PHL/sunshine
Day 2/IAD/sunshine
Day 3/BWI/sunshine
Day 4/DCA/CLOUDY
I have a 300m lens. At BWI and DCA, I know that will be fine, but I've never shot approach at IAD, so there's that factor. I've got most of the foreign stuff at IAD, anyway.
But I don't have some things that come into DCA, like the EMB-170 or the Dornier 328
Or maybe I just want to visit a field where I can see US in all its glory.
WHO THE F ARE YOU TO TELL ME HOW TO HAVE FUN?????!!!!!!!!!!!!
And going by your thinking....
You live in Florida, being within 75 miles of the beach. Therefore, no need for you to ever go to Hawaii or Bermuda or Acapulco, or the Carribean.
Ooooo....speaking of the Carribbean, what about SXM? Why do people flock down there, paying a lot more than the $118 I paid for this trip I might add.
Hey, you know what? When you get off that plane, you're free to go whever you want, don't let me stop you. You want visit the sights???? Well, guess which airport you have to pass to get to them. And when we go to NY, I guess we'll SKIP Plane View Park. After all its just US 319, DL M80, AA M80, CO 735, DL 763, UA 320, NW 320, FL 717, Comair CRJ, US 734, bla bla bla.....We can get all that down here, right??????? Why do you drive 150 miles roundtrip to TPA, when you can get ALL of that same stuff in nearby MCO?
