AIRLINERS.NET CREW SITE ADMIN
As you know, the view counter on your photos are only counting distinct views, one from each IP address. Naturally, there's always going to be ways around this but misuse has not been a major problem in the past. Our logs of IP addresses, referrers etc show that it does happen but rarely and we normally just remove such views and disable counting of views from that IP in the future.
A recent detailed revision of the view logs have showed a few cases of photographers trying to increase their view count by using scripts and dynamic IP addresses to artificially increase their views and thereby getting a higher standing on top lists and similar on Airliners.net. Such findings have now forced us to add a new and strict rule:
A photographer caught with artificially increasing the view counter of his photos will risk having all his photos removed from our database. We take this issue very seriously and will not hesitate to take action when we find proof of this behavior in our logs.
This new rule is active as of right now. Any photographers that are currently using any method to artificially increase your view count should stop immediately or risk having your photos removed.
Note that normal use, such as viewing your own photos is not prohibited at all - only excessive use.
Sincerely,
Johan Lundgren
Working on the site from morning 'till night that's livin' alright (1997-2007), now I'm in Spain

Nice work Johan, it is nice to see that months of discussion there has been a firm policy put in place. It is pathetic that a few photographers are so desperate for attention that they feel the need to cheat, not only themselves but others as well.

James , you may be right you may be wrong
but still .... i personally cannot see why its so essential for people to fake this facility , cant we just aim for having the "shot" thats deserves it purley on merit

I can't agree more, why would someone bother going to all that trouble to generate a few hundred hits for themselves? What do they gain apart for generating a whole lot of work for the site admin. Get rid of them and let people know who they are so they can't repeat their acts.
Jid.

Call me naive but I am a little shocked that people would resort to such tactics. Well done Johan, this action is definitely appreciated by this photographer!

Now when I have a picture that I like that I have uploaded I will normally leave it in its own window for the first say 4-6hours so that periodically I can re-upload the page to see the count. Now when I re-upload the page it won't count my view which I don't care about b/c I'm not really about views but does that create an issue on your end in terms of unfair hits?
Thanks again and if I need not to do this please let me know.

I look at them just to see if anyone is interested in my photos but I'm not all hardcore and willing to cheat for numbers. For me if they look at it they look at it if they don't they don't. Getting into a.net alone is good enough for me.

Good thing with which i can only agree.
Although a "clean" count can only be reached when all images are accepted at the same time.
One in the 24/48hour list for 47 and another for 25 is just as much cheating and i am quite sure this is happening a lot more then the ip-cheats.
Forgot something !
Does this mean i have to tell my colleagues not to click my images anymore ?
At work we all go by one server with one ip-address so when i have new work on you might see 50 to 80 clicks which is not done by me !
I can assure you my boss won't like to see me on the internet all day, not even for an hour.
