Hi all,

I just received an email from "mr. Krishna" for the use of the following picture in "The Hindu" newspaper. They're doing an article about Indian avaition and it will be going to print on friday, so I have to respond fast. The guy used a yahoo email address, so I'm a bit cautious (why not ...@hinduonnet.com?) and they say the can not pay for the use. Instead they will send a copy of the magazine and put credits with the picture. In the past, most of the time when I was promised a copy of the magazine, I got nothing...
Has anyone gotten a similar request?

Thanks,
Eduard

No bucks, no buck rogers

Dont give him the photo...unless maybe they can give you some free ad space in their pub or something

Thanks Royal,
You're right, I won't answer their request. The Hindu newspaper has a sub-website called http://www.thehinduimages.com. They sell images there. I don't want my shot to end up there... If they sell images, they can also buy them. And if the Indian bank system makes it difficult to transfer money overseas and they don't want to go through the trouble (the reason why the could not pay for my picture, company policy so-they-say), than too bad... I'm not going to rush into something like this...
Cheers,
Ed

good call Ed.

Some people like the thrill of "seeing their name in print."

But, if you never get a copy, and its 7,000 miles away, in a language you don't speak (well maybe you do) who cares!

Don't think it is a good idea to put names in your post Eduard.
A commercial deal is something between you and the customer.

On the subject:
Not everything can be paid with money and as long your name is not Rembrandt don't expect people to pay you that easily, if you don't want to deliver probably 7500 others will.
I have had publications in De Telegraaf, Algemeen Dagblad, Verenigde Vleugels and Propliners to name a few...... all without cashing any money.
Did i work for free, no of course not.
Got my name known in the places that matter most to me.
Now doors will open that would have been closed for example it resulted in working for Aero Cartho where i am one of the two Air to Ground photographers or doing Air to Air work for the Aviodrome every time something nice comes by.
In other words: what do you want yourself ?

Yeah I got the same mail yesterday asking for an Air India image.
I basically told them No fee No Image! And also included that I would expect a fee up to 250 GBP for such use.
Cheeky Git!

However, as ever I won't be able to check if they use it illegally

I see where aviopic is coming from in that you need start small and quite often if you let photos be used for free, your name will get around and it might lead to bigger things.

I have had a couple of people ask if they can use one of my pictures on their websites. I have no problem letting them use it for free as long as they credit me.

Ryan,
I have no problem with that kind of publications either:  Big grin
http://www.futurastudios.com/atc-aviation-books.html
But before sending a 3500x2400 pixel image to India in a hurry, to a company that has its own image database for selling purposes, I'd think it over first.  Smile

Eduard

I had the same email as well and I couldn't even think about the answer because I don't have the big file of the AI pic anymore. If I had it, I guess I would have started the same topic asking what to do  Laugh out loud Problem solved anyway.

hehe.... Well where i come from is not so much an issue i think.
My point is that the aviation market is very crowded, by photographers that is now the equipment is within reach for most people.
Therefore it is unlikely someone will pay me 250(whatever) for an image they can get from everybody or even produce themselves unless your name is close to legendary.
In my opinion it requires a lot of investment to get your name established, not only in equipment but above all in effort.

Oh don't worry about me  Laugh out loud
Last month i sold 84 30x20 prints and this month i am up to 18 already even though we are only 5 days in it.

Cheers,
Willem

I have just respectfully declined their usage for free request. I hope they will honour that but then, how will I ever know?!?  Wink/being sarcastic

Cheers!
