Which Canon Lens For $400-600?

I would like opinions on which Canon lens to get for $400-600 US. I was thinking the 100-400, but i didn't know it is.. $1400?!?! THAT IS CRAZY!  crazy   crazy   dollarsign  So.... can anyone recommed something with great zoom for the price I mentioned?

For quality you cannot beat the 70-200 F/4 L. Its sharp. You will be lacking in reach however.

You cannot go wrong with the Canon 70-200 F4 L. It is not only tack sharp, but it focuses extremely fast. If you find you need a little more reach, this lens does work with the 1.4x teleconverter.

What's wrong with the answers you got? The 70-200 is probably the best zoom lens available in that price range.
