AIRLINERS.NET CREW
HEAD SCREENER

I have just kindly been informed of an unauthorised use of one of my photographs on the front page of a Norwegian Newspaper, credited to airliners.net, but not to me.
I am not sure how to do what others have called a screen grab and when I go simply to save or save as the pics do not show.
Can anyone help me please.
The pic is nothing special, but it is the principle of businesses using our photos for free !

- go to the webpage.
- Press the "Print" butto on your keyboard. The page will be stored in the clipboard of your PC.
- Switch over to photoshop.
- Create a new file (dimensions will be set autmatically to the dimensions of the hardcopy)
- Insert the clipboard into the new file (ctrl + v)
- Save as jpg

done!!!

Peter
Thank you
With the airliners.net Police watching, perhaps one day this will stop, though I doubt it.

Mick,
It was pointed out in a thread some time ago that newspapers may well equate crediting A.net (but not the photographer) with crediting a photo to an agency like Reuters, France Presse, etc.

Mark
Thanks, I wasn't aware of that.
However, they pay Reuters and Reuters presumably pay the photographer but I doubt they pay airliners.net.
Perhaps that would be the way forward, for airliners net to charge but give the photographer a share, almost like a print sale.
Difficult to manage though
Mick

Mark,

Reuters, France Presse etc are different story. Newspapers pay for usage of the images. Airliners.net is not an Agency that gives pictures for credit (read for FREE). In this case, photographers copyrights were violated and he can demand pay for the usage.

Take care,
Rafal

Are you sure? What about that other site that is charging customers to view our images? There are two threads on this issue right now.

AirNav ACARS decoder software is also using pictures from airliners.net. They charge $70 for the software.
If you are familliar with the software you will know what I'm talking about.
When you intercept overflying aircraft, small thumbnail will be displayed, if you click on that thumbnail it will open large picture here on Airliners.net.

What bothers me is, that they are charing for the software and they are using our pictures. (Everyday I see at least 4-5 of mine pictures there). Our pictures adding VALUE to the software. Not many people would pay $70 just to get aircraft data from ACARS. I know that many people likes the picture option.

What can we do about it?

Crew response ( Johan, Henks, whoever? ) would be very helpful and appropriate here.

Thanks for the help.
I have sent the publication a bill for 250EU and pointed out that it would have neen cheaper if they had sought my permission first.
That, I hope, makes the point too about unauthorised use.

An update
Been out all day today and they have offered me 100Eu (approx same in dollars)
I think I will accept just to avoid things getting messy.
Might make them stop and think next time anyway.

Mick,
100euro is less than they would have paid any photographer even when asking permission first.

You might want to reconcider.

I haven't seen the article or even know the name of the paper concerned but I received an E Mail from a Norwegian advising me that a picture of mine had also been used on the front page of a Norwegian newspaper without any credit or asking permission. Like Mick said my picture is nothing special but the principle of the matter. It is a nose close up of an El Al B747 landing at Heathrow taken from Myrtle Avenue.

Any details of the name of the paper and a contact would be appreciated to seek compensation.

Best regards

Ian Haskell

Ian
Now there's a thing.....
Mine is an old photo of an El Al jumbo landing.
Certain it is mine, one that was screened just last week.
I would bet we are talking about the same picture in the paper !

This gets better.........
I felt sure that Ian and and I must have been talking about and claiming the same photograph but we are not.
The Newspaper in question sent me a copy of the front page but it did not have my photo on it, but does have Ians.
I do however have a copy of the front page with mine on too!
Looks like it has just cost them more.
Jan, thank you for your comment. I think I will stick with my 250Eu and come down a bit if pushed. I have not replied yet.

Way to go man, stick it to 'em!! I'm all for sharing one's photos, but that is just crossing the line when one's work gets used and abused.  bigthumbsup
