I've been contacted by Miguel Silva about donating photos to his new magazine. Other than accreditation given each photo, the only benefit for me would be a free magazine.
I'd love to help him get this publication off the ground but I'm leary about giving away my photos. What do y'all think?

I've received a similar email today from this magazine. Interestingly mine came from someone else - Luis Pessoa. I wonder why they would not come from the same sender .
I have no experience of this kind of thing, and know that previously people have expressed suspicion here about such requests being sent by email. My natural tendency towards wariness will kick in here and I'll wait to see what other colleagues think before doing anything.

Unless you make a living out of your photographs (anyone here?), then what's the harm in having one of your photographs printed in a magazine? I'd be honoured! After all, you are all prepared to upload here for nothing. What's the difference?
So what if the magazine owners make a profit. Be honest, you'd be pleased as punch to see one of your pics in a magazine. Remember, to most of us, it's a hobby, not a way of living.
Awaiting flack
Sean

I think that magazines like this are great for our hobby, and for good causes, I have no problem dontaitng a little of my work to help that cause.
Go for it.
Would you be able to email me his email address to bigphilnyc@yahoo.com. I'd like to volunteer my photos as well if he is willing.

Right now I'm an unemployed college student if that means anything.

I was referring to your comments earlier in this thread (in case you didn't get it from the "quote"), so yes, I think it does have something to do with where this thread is going.

Um , if this dude is going to make a profit , I would at least expect pay not just a free magazine. I originally posted to find out whether this is magazine is for real or this is one of those fake spam e-mails sent to all the photographers...

I'm more pleased when I see my name on a check that comes in the mail.

Quoting Sean377 (Reply 15): Well, like I said, unless photography pays the mortgage (to which no-one replied)! If it's doesn't, what's the problem?
That's not the point. I personally don't enjoy giving my work out for free if someone else is going to make money off it. There are exceptions of course.
Quoting Sean377 (Reply 15): Is a couple of hundred bucks really going to change your life? I'd rather have the satisfaction
That's the problem, a lot of photographers are cool with the "satisfaction" and that in turn screws the working-photog. No a couple of hundred bucks is not going to change my life. And I do not live off my photo sales income. However, a couple hundred bucks times 10 or 20 published pics per year is a nice figure. Yeah, it's nice to see your "name in lights" but that quickly fades. I like to use a quote from Jerry McGuire, Show me the money...

Because I enjoy sharing my photos with others and a side benefit is few bucks I get from sales. Would I upload if no one ever purchased a picture, yes. Remember, this is a hobby for me as well, a serious hobby. If I did not enjoy doing this I certainly would not be here. I've been doing this a very very long time and it's still very much and always will be a part of my life.
Quoting Sean377 (Reply 17): And 10 or 20 pics a year borders on becoming 'work'.
More like a hobby that takes a lot of work. Work to become a better photographer, work to learn better post-processing, work to learn programming to run my own site, work to find new means of possible sales, work, work, work. If I sold 0 pictures, 10 pictures or 1,000 pictures, I still would not screw the real working pros (I'm not) out of their living by offering free photos to clients that should pay. Remember, you have to think not only of yourself.

Mike
I don't want to harp on, coz this is going nowhere, but you say "work to find new means of possible sales" i.e. you intend or would like to make money out of your pics.
Some would, some wouldn't.
Regards
Sean

Sean, whatever works. Just think of others. By you (or anyone) giving away photos for free (to see your name in lights) you are screwing with people that try to make a living. No, I'm not talking about me. I do this for fun. Yes, I do intend to make money off my photos when I can, why shouldn't I? but trust me, I am very much into this as a hobby...probably much more than you are, if I may be so bold to say so. Anyone who knows me, would agree.

Before you admire my pics, you must pay me No hard feelings, I understand your views to a point and glad you understand me.

As someone who has very little money, I am happy when I sell my photos. I have just sold some of my ship photos to a company and am very pleased, especially as I have ambitions to become professional or semi-professional. If people can sell their photos, Sean, then please tell me what is wrong with that?
If someone offers me money for my photos I am hardly going to turn them down.
