Here in the UK, the local shops can't quite match internet prices, but they'll get pretty close if you are persistant enough. If I'm spending £1000 on something as sophisticated (therefore more likely to go wrong) as a DSLR, I'd rather pay the extra and buy it from somewhere I can take it back the day it stops working for a swap/refund.
Plus the shops offer 0% finance which is unusual on the net.
Maybe worth looking at.

Check out Dell.com. That's where I bought my 20D in November and this week, my 100-400mm L lens. They offer deals like no interest for 6 months, etc. Good way to not feel guilty about dropping 1500 for the camera.
