Hey!

In the IMAGE menu the shadow/highlight feature sure does a lot to enhance pics.
Can anyone let me know how and when to use this feature when processing from jpeg fine?
I'm sure it fits someplace in the workflow, and I'm wide open as to how to utilize this tool.
What values do you use? Does it have disadvantages? When do you apply?

THANKS! in advance
Denis

I really don't use that, as I usually stick to the histogram when dealing with lighting and contrast. That is the little window that looks like a line graph, with the three sliders at the bottom. The histogram is your friend, and learning to use it can really help your photos.

I think the shadows/highlights tool is excellent, as long as it's used reasonably. I certainly don't use it on most of the photos I edit, but it is useful to have when I need it. It's good for brightening very dark shadows, although it brings out a lot of noise at the same time if you use too much of it. Just use your own judgement to decide how much you should apply.

I use the highlights part of the tool much less than the shadows, and only if parts of the image are really blown out. Knocking the highlights too far up often seems to make a sort of a dark halo around the subject.

If I use the shadows/highlights tool, it's usually the first thing I do after leveling and cropping.

We see this on many photos uploaded lately. Be aware that also a brighter halo around the subject can appear when overusing the tool. Or even worse a combination of both (dark in some areas and bright in others).
Just a reminder to avoid quality/manipulation rejections.

PHOTO SCREENER

Hi all

Do not over use this feature.

White halos appear around objects if too high a setting is used and the image looks crap. Rejection will happen.

The screeners have already seen multiple uploads of this nature. The photographer just hasn't got a clue about processing.

Regards

Gary

I am experimenting with some work that is a little underexposed and both the histogram tool and s/h seems to improve the crispness. It seems that like you said; too much of a good thing ruins the shot.
Increased grain is a problem with overuse and one must play around a lot to get a result that will be accepted.
I do appreciate your responses!

Well, give us a clue about using this feature in regard to workflow, levels etc. if you have a minute.

THANKS!
