Hey guys,

Am just packing my camera bag and im on the fence about what stuff to take for shooting at SYD!

I am definatly taking my 1dmk2 and my 10D. The mk2 being my primary camera. As for a long lens im going to take the 70-200F4L for general travel shooting but for aviation im not sure whether to take the 100-400LIS or the sigma 120-300F2.8EX. With the mk2 the 120-300 is only a 390mm at it's longest whereas my 100-400LIS will act like a 520mm. My gut says take the 100-400L as it is lighter and a lot smaller than the 120-300 but the 120-300 is just such a nice quality lens.

Im totally going mad! What shall i do. What length is adequate for SYD shooting???

Chris

Evening Chris,

I am off to Sydney in June and dropped an E-mail to the screener Gleen Stewart.

He advised me that a 70 - 200 is ideal for shooting at Sydney.

I use the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX HSM and also have a 1.4x EX convertor so this is what I will be taking.

When are you off to Sydney?

It would be good to have a chat with you sometime both about Sydney and your equipment.

If your up for a chat put me in on messenger:-

Yeah im meeting up with Glenn on sunday! I fly out in about 8 hours or so on EK out of LGW via DXB and BKK!

Yeah ill stick you on msn and we can have a chat. Dont mind giving advice about equipment. How do you find the 70-200? I was looking at picking up the F2.8 sigma as a stop gap until i can get the 70-200IS.

I'll be at Syd for most of the week in the mornings. Very good opportunities from the mound near the control tower. Email me via contact details in my user profile.

Chris
Hope its not to late.
The 100-400 will cover everything.
At the obs deck the 400 comes in handy but around the airfield 200-300 is fine.
You cant go wrong with the 100-400 and you will probably do some walking so it will be easier on the back.

Chris,

Definately bring the 100-400, you'd regret leaving that at home within the first 10mins as far as creative shooting goes!!!!

Might see you around!

Hey guys,

Im back now, just got in! Long old flight! SYD-DXB-LGW! Oh man is a 15 hour flight long!

I ended up taking the 120-300 and the 70-200 in the end! Didnt read this post in time! For the bit of time i spent there the 120-300 worked great and wasnt too heavy, it was used a lot at Taronga zoo where the F2.8 helped a lot!

At syd i was also very lucky to be able to use the 70-200LIS of Mr Glenn Stewart which was very nice! Shame i didnt get to meet either of you too. I will let you guys know in advance of the dates of my next trip out there so we can meet up.

I also want to say a HUGE thank you to Glenn for being a great host in Sydney. Not only did he show me most of the great spots at SYD he also showed me a lot of the city that most tourists would not see and was just a great person to hang out with! Cheers for that Glenn, you really made the trip excellent for me! I look forward to shooting SYD again with you in nicer weather!

Cheers, Chris

Glad to see you got home and in one piece. Taking you around was my pleasure - I'll be happy to do it again; hope you're back in September.

If you're coming back, I think I'll have to let Shep and the other Sydney spotters know. We can get a steak at the Dog! It's not a nice simple $5 or $10 -300g steak. Instead you'll be having a much larger mouth watering manly steak (probably about 2-3 times the size). Just ask Craig what the large ones are like  Wink (He and Sam are probably among the few who have managed to finish one).

Btw.... Leaving on Sunday night, you left behind a Harbour in complete fog a-la Tenerife '77. I could hardly see the ferry in the morning to step on it. Can't imagine how the airport was going.

Winter is finally on the way  Smile

(Although, it's 25C today, sunny....... most people are still wearing winter clothes.... go figure)

Best regards,

Glenn Stewart
