Hi folks, I'm off to St Maarten in October and just wondered if anyone who's been there can help me with:

- the best lens(es) to take with me (I have a Canon 20D + 17-40, 28-135 and 100-400)

- the best place to stay; I'm currently booked in at the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort but having read a couple of reports on tripadvisor.com, I'm having second thoughts!

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,  airplane

Heck, if you have backpack for your gear, take them all! I would bet the 17-40 would be perfect for the beach. What do I know though, I've never been there!  Smile

Hey,

I stayed in the La Terrasse while I was there there and it was great. It's part of the Royal Islander Club with the Sonest so you have access to the Sonesta's pool area (you can access the La Terrasse pool if you stay in the Sonesta). I thought the Sonesta looked great and I would have perfered to stay there.

Ater you finish shooting arrivals I'd highly suggest you head over to the La Terrasse's pool side for shooting departures.

That's me standing there! The lighting is really good there in the early evening and can make for some great pictures. This was taken from that point at around 150mm.

I can't help you much with lens advice, I only have a single fixed 35-380mm lens. Let me know if I can help any more.

Have fun down there,

Alex.

I like trains just as much as planes but trains don't like the Atlantic!

Hey,

Stay at the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort!! Trust me, it's the greatest.

Don't stay far away from the airport... you'll find it to be a pain. If you do stay at the Sonesta, you can walk out your hotel room and be down at the beach in minutes by taking a short walk on the northern stretch of the beach.

18mm-200mm was perfect for me. Anything less may cause much frusteration... so bring everything you have!

This is cropped from a 200mm shot, just to show you what balconies have to offer:

There is a fine line between a picture and a photo. The latter seems to be disappearing.

Your 17-40mm will be perfect for 757 and bigger planes over the Beach.
Try Art Brett's excellent site http://www.anniebees.com/Photos/SpottingSaintMaarten.htm for info on "mm" required for other locations.
This pic of mine is at approx. 24mm
